Shelby Co. Inmate Found Dead

SIDNEY — An inmate at the Shelby County Jail hanged himself early Monday morning.

According to a news release from Shelby County Sheriff John R. Lenhart, at 6:13 a.m., Ronald Walling was found hanging by a bed sheet in his cell during a routine inmate check. Jail staff immediately began CPR and paramedics arrived on the scene shortly after Walling was found. Walling was pronounced dead at 6:46 a.m.

Sun Shines On Winterfest

ST. MARYS — After inclement weather postponed an annual holiday festival, the activities kicked off again for Winterfest Sunday in Memorial Park.

The St. Marys Optimist Club sponsors the annual festival, which brings exotic animals, ice skating, Santa Claus, cookies and hot chocolate, entertainment and a live nativity to town each year.

ST. MARYS — A group of fifth-grade students is foraying into television as part of a new program.

A group of some fifth-grade students have created the St. Marys Intermediate School News Crew, where they are either creating the school’s morning announcements or putting together features for special assignments around the building.

St. Marys 45, Coldwater 34

St. Marys senior guard D.J. Manning exploded for 20 points on 5-of-5 shooting from beyond the three-point arc and St. Marys pulled away from Coldwater in the second half on Saturday night at Murotech Court.

J.D. Meyer added 13 points for the Roughriders.

Austin Bruns led Coldwater with 12 points.

Saturday Girls Basketball: New Bremen, Minster win

Minster 44, Fort Loramie 43

MINSTER — Claire Fischer drained a free throw with five seconds left to give Minster a 44-43 win over rival Fort Loramie on Saturday afternoon at Minster.

Minster rallied back from a deficit in the third quarter with a big run spurred by Bridget Geiger and Tara Clune.

Clune scored a team-high 14 points (eight of those in the second half) and Geiger added 12 points for the Wildcats (10 of those in the third quarter and all 12 in the second half).

The St. Marys boys basketball team started another game off sluggishly, spotting the Kenton Wildcats 10 points to start Friday night’s Western Buckeye League opener.

This time the Roughriders awoke from the slumber in time to pick up their first victory of the season.

Engineer ‘Beets’ Icy Roads

WAPAKONETA — The Auglaize County engineer is trying a new method to combat snow and ice on roads this winter — beat juice.

Starting with a truck equipped with one unit of a beet juice salt brine mixture, which treats stone and salt before it is laid on county roads, Auglaize County Engineer Doug Reinhart said they are in the process of adding three additional units.

NEW KNOXVILLE — New Knoxville Local School students and staff joined together to save approximately 90 lives Friday morning by donating 15 minutes of their time to donate blood, as the school hosted its annual Red Cross blood drive.

The New Knoxville Student council organized the annual drive, bringing approximately 30 students and staff members to the little gym at New Knoxville Local School. According to the Red Cross, three lives are saved with each donation. Every two seconds, according to the Red Cross, a blood transfusion is needed.
