Girls Basketball

New Knoxville 50, Spencerville 27

NEW KNOXVILLE — The New Knoxville girls basketball team got out to a 10-0 lead against Spencerville and went on to nearly double-up the Bearcats in a 50-27 victory  on Tuesday night.

The Rangers had their offense going from the opening tip as they scored 10 straight points, including three layups, in the first three minutes of the game.

Paige Lehman led the Rangers with 12 points. Haley Horstman added 11 points.

Campaign Nears Milestone

WAPAKONETA — Since its campaign kick-off in October, the United Way of Auglaize County has raised more than $240,000 of its $300,000 goal this year to aid Auglaize County residents in need.

Though many have reported their results, United Way of Auglaize County Director Randy Fisher said approximately 18 workplace campaigns have yet to report.

“Some of our major donors out there have yet to contribute to this year’s campaign,” he said.

Unemployment Plunges

ST. MARYS — After edging up slightly in October, unemployment numbers in Auglaize County fell by 1 percent in November.

In data released by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, Auglaize County’s unemployment rate settled in at 6.4 percent, down 1 percent from its October rate of 7.4 percent. A year ago, the unemployment rate for the county sat at 8.4 percent.

NASHVILLE — Erika Thornsberry, a Lipscomb freshman and St. Marys Memorial grad, scored eight points and grabbed two rebounds in Lipscomb’s 76-65 win over Gardner-Webb on Sunday afternoon in the Bisons’ final game before the new year. Thornsberry went 3-for-5 from the floor in 14 minutes. Thornsberry averages 4.4 points and 2.3 rebounds per game.

Drug Bust Nets 13

WAPAKONETA — A drug sweep of the area Monday by local law enforcement officers ensnared more than a dozen people on a myriad of drug-related charges.

Auglaize-Mercer Grand Lake Task Force members started early Monday, arresting 13 people in Wapakoneta, St. Marys, Celina and Lima.

Fire Destroys Home In Buckland

BUCKLAND — A Buckland woman was injured as she tried to save her dog from a fire that engulfed her home early this morning.

The dog perished in the fire and Becky Krites, 45, who suffered burns from trying to save him, was transported by Cridersville EMS to St. Rita’s Medical Center in Lima and then transferred to Columbus for further treatment.

“It looks like she was injured trying to get back in to get the dog out,” Buckland Volunteer Fire Department Chief Todd Vorhees said of the former Buckland Village Council member.

Shelby Co. Inmate Found Dead

SIDNEY — An inmate at the Shelby County Jail hanged himself early Monday morning.

According to a news release from Shelby County Sheriff John R. Lenhart, at 6:13 a.m., Ronald Walling was found hanging by a bed sheet in his cell during a routine inmate check. Jail staff immediately began CPR and paramedics arrived on the scene shortly after Walling was found. Walling was pronounced dead at 6:46 a.m.

Sun Shines On Winterfest

ST. MARYS — After inclement weather postponed an annual holiday festival, the activities kicked off again for Winterfest Sunday in Memorial Park.

The St. Marys Optimist Club sponsors the annual festival, which brings exotic animals, ice skating, Santa Claus, cookies and hot chocolate, entertainment and a live nativity to town each year.
