Officer Brings Wildlife Indoors

ST. MARYS — A local wildlife officer spoke to a group of area seniors Tuesday afternoon at St. Marys Living Center about various animals found in Auglaize County.

“I’m going to talk to you today about some of the critters that we have here in Auglaize County,” Auglaize County Wildlife Officer Matt Hoehn said, displaying a box full of animal skins for seniors to see and feel. “Everything I have in this box, you’ve either seen or it’s around here.”

Fish Still Biting At Lake

ST. MARYS — A mild winter so far this season has resulted in better-than-normal fishing at Grand Lake St. Marys.

“The fishing has been really good both in the lake and below the spillway,” Grand Lake St. Marys Park Manager Brian Miller told The Evening Leader. “In the lake have been crappie and blue gill and below the spillway, people are catching crappie and walleye. We are seeing very good numbers in both areas.”

BOYS BASKETBALL: New Knoxville travels to Wapakoneta

If New Knoxville wants to earn its first road win of the season, slowing down one of the Western Buckeye League’s best scorers will be one of the biggest keys.

New Knoxville will be charged with defending Wapakoneta’s Travis Bertram, who has had a breakout season. Bertram averages 17.8 points per game. Bertram scored 25 points against Celina  with five three-pointers.

Former MAC commish among three to be inducted into Parkway HOF

Parkway High School will honor three former athletes and administrators in a Hall of Fame ceremony at the Saturday, Feb. 11 home boys basketball game against Lima Perry.

Jon Sidenbender is a 1953 Rockford High School grad who was the first commissioner of the Midwest Athletic Conference. He served as commissioner for 24 years from 1973 to 1997. Sidenbender was instrumental in adding girls sports to the MAC. He was the head basketball coach at Parkway from 1964 to 1967.

Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship this Saturday: The St Marys  Knights of Columbus Council 1592 will sponser  the local level  of the 2012 Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship on Saturday, January 21 at 4:30 p.m. at Murotech Court in Memorial High School.

 The Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship is sponsored annually with winners progressing through local, district,region and state competions .

Gladys Amelia (Stroh) Fledderjohann, 90

Gladys Amelia (Stroh) Fledderjohann, 90, loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 15, 2012, surrounded by her loving family.

Gladys was born on Oct. 16, 1921, in her childhood home near New Knoxville, the only daughter of four children born to Vernon and Ella (Vordermark) Stroh, and they preceded her in death.

On May 25, 1941, she married Vernon Fledderjohann, and he preceded her in death.

Margaret R. “Maggie” Ellis, 78

Margaret R. “Maggie” Ellis, 78, of Celina, died on Sunday, Jan. 15, 2012, at her daughter’s residence.

She was born on March 28, 1933, in Celina, to Earl E. and Roie A. (Gaskill) Vorhees, and they preceded her in death.

On Dec. 24, 1954, she married Charles E. Ellis, and he preceded her in death on Nov. 29, 1991.

She is survived by a daughter, Debra (Jim) Fishbaugh of Celina; a granddaughter; a sister; her nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a brother; a sister.

Louis R. Bruns, 88

Louis R. Bruns, 88, of 2641 Goettemoeller Road, Maria Stein, died on Sunday, Jan. 15, 2012, at The Gardens at St. Henry.

He was born on July 24, 1923, in St. Rose, to Charles and Anna (Meier) Bruns, and they preceded him in death.

On Sept. 8, 1948, he married Mary Evelyn Schmitmeyer, and she preceded him in death on Nov. 15, 1989.

Hospital Nets Incentive

ST. MARYS — Joint Township District Memorial Hospital was recently awarded a $1.5 million incentive from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) for its participation in the electronic health records incentive program.

The program, Meaningful EHR Use, challenges care providers to move toward electronic records through a series of phases to be implemented through 2015. Patient Care Vice President Deb McKee said Joint Township District Memorial Hospital approached Phase I of the program by focusing on the hospital’s emergency department.

Turn Could Be OK'd

ST. MARYS — Motorists heading west onto Indiana Avenue from Defiance Road could soon be able to turn right on red.

Members of the St. Marys Traffic Committee voted to send a recommendation to city council that would allow for right turns on red at the intersection of Indiana Avenue and Defiance Road, near the Auglaize County Council on Aging, from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. John Bubp, the 1st Ward Councilor, asked the matter be referred to the committee during last week’s city council meeting.
