Eugene E. Kettler, 81

April 9, 2012

Eugene E. Kettler, 81, of Kettlersville, died at 1:12 p.m. Saturday, April 7, 2012, at the Fairhaven Home in Sidney.  

He was born on Feb. 19, 1931, near Kettlersville, to Homer and Ruth (Egbert) Kettler, and they preceded him in death.

On March 10, 1951, he married Ethel Mae Howell, and she preceded him in death on Oct. 11, 2008.

Allan D. Downing Sr., 69

Allan D. Downing Sr., 69, of rural Wharton, died at 6:42 p.m. Friday, April 6, 2012, at the Wyandot Memorial Hospital Emergency Room in Upper Sandusky.

He was born on Aug. 25, 1942, in Lima, to Alfred L. and Donna Mae (Garee) Downing, and his mother preceded him in death. His father survives in Spencerville.

On March 24, 1982, in Upper Sandusky, he married Trina K. Laipply, and she survives in rural Wharton.

Wing Crown Up For Grabs

NEW BREMEN — Chicken wing fans from around the region packed the New Bremen American Legion to taste, judge and visit with friends during the sixth annual New Bremen Sons of the American Legion’s MAC Wingfest.

“This year we have 10 vendors,” Wingfest Chair Rodney Suchland said. “Usually we have 10 or 12, so it’s about average.”

The doors opened at 4 p.m. Saturday, and a steady stream of people crowded the Legion to participate in the annual event that pits wing vendors from around the area for the top titles.

Children Hop Along Trail

ST. MARYS — Local businesses opened their doors to local children during an annual community event on Saturday.

Children hopped down the Bunny Trail in St. Marys on Saturday, making their way to local businesses and collecting various items during their trek.

“So far we’ve been to Family Video, McDonald’s, Subway, the Trading Company, the library, Vogel Insurance, State Farm, High 5, A Bit of Nature, St. Marys Living Center, the Council on Aging,” Matthew Ingersoll said.

ROUND-UP: New Bremen softball outslugs Jackson Center

NEW BREMEN — The runs came fast and furious Friday evening for both the Jackson Center and New Bremen softball teams, but  an 11-run third inning highlighted by a grand slam from Julie Brown gave the Cardinals a 22-10 victory over the Tigers.

Mary Catherine Buening, 68

Mary Catherine (Kay) Buening, 68, of Coldwater, died on Thursday, April 5, 2012, at Briarwood Village, Coldwater.

She was born on Jan. 15, 1944, in St. Henry, to Aloys Wendel and William and Viola (Everman) Wuebker. On Nov. 23, 1968, she married Gerald J. Buening, and he died on July 20, 2007.

Chief Stresses Bike Safety

ST. MARYS — As spring sets in, a local police chief says motorists should be cognizant of the fact more vehicles will soon be hitting the road.

“It’s that time of year when we all have to be mindful and on the look out for more bikes, motorcycles and mopeds,” St. Marys Police Chief Greg Foxhoven said. “We all have to remind ourselves we share the road with these vehicles.”

Regarding bicyclists, Foxhoven said he has noticed a common misconception that could result in crashes.

Group Tackles Bullying

ST. MARYS — A local youth organization is working to combat bullying and will kick off its campaign later this month.

On April 21, Grand Lake Theatrix and Kidz Drama Klub will kick off an anti-bullying campaign with a 5K run/walk, “Run, Bully! Run.” Grand Lake Theatrix Director Vickie Shurelds said the group was looking for an event that would fit several of its needs when members chose to hold the run.

Choir, Band Earn High Marks

ST. MARYS — Local musicians recently received top honors during a competition held earlier this month and will soon be advancing to the state level.

The Memorial High School Symphonic Band, Symphonic Choir and Concert Choir received superior ratings at the Ohio Music Education Large Group Adjudicated Event held March 16 and 17 in Celina.

The competition, Band Director Dane Newlove said, is done annually but this was a first for the groups.

Bunny Trail Saturday

ST. MARYS —  The St. Marys Community Partnership will be hosting the 2012 Bunny Trail Saturday.

The event will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and will offer treats to participants as well as a chance to win the big basket. Children must be accompanied by an adult with his or her own transportation. There is no admission, but canned goods will be collected for Agape Food Pantry. Also, be sure to bring a good-sized basket.
