MINSTER – Marion Local defeated ninth-ranked Minster 26-17 in a Midwest Athletic Conference homecoming showdown on Friday.
“We played really well tonight. This is a big win for us and we’ve been waiting a long time for this one,” said Marion Local head coach Tim Goodwin. “We played, not real well, (but) we played hard. We made plays and Minster played really well too. It was just two, evenly-matched teams.”
Goodwin said he was most happy with his team’s resiliency throughout the game.
NEW BREMEN – During the week New Bremen Cardinals head football coach stated that the New Bremen-Fort Recovery game would likely be close.
He likely didn’t know just how right he’d be.
Fort Recovery won that close match-up 34-33 at New Bremen on Friday night.
Two big interceptions by Fort Recovery in the fourth quarter put the nail into the coffin for New Bremen as freshman Cole Hull intercepted an Elliot Westerbeck pass with 1:21 to end the Cardinal threat and cap a wild contest.
ST. MARYS — A traveling exhibit in the county has a portion located in town, featuring items from a local collection.
"New Harmonies: Celebrating American Roots Music" is a traveling exhibit from the Smithsonian Institute presented by the Auglaize County Historical Society and the Auglaize County Public District Library.
The St. Marys Community Public Library features a locally based arm of the exhibit, noting musical instruments from St. Marys resident Jeff Squire's collection, as well as pieces found in the St. Marys library.
NEW BREMEN — Superintendent Ann Harvey will be leaving the district at the end of the month, as she accepted a position as superintendent at the Auglaize County ESC Thursday night.
Harvey said she anticipates her last day in New Bremen to be Sept. 30, and she will begin work at the Auglaize County ESC in early October. She said she is looking forward to the challenge.
ST. MARYS — For six years, residents and area musicians have joined together to open their hearts for one person.
Bill “Blood” Jolliff has put on “Blood’s Heart Jam” ever since he was the recipient of a fundraiser.
“Mine was in 2006,” Jolliff said of his quadruple bypass surgery. “I started them after that. This will be my sixth one.”
“Blood’s Heart Jam 2011” kicks off this afternoon at Varsity Lanes.

ST. MARYS — State officials have labeled the illness of a Montgomery County man earlier this year as probably caused by exposure to water in Grand Lake St. Marys.
Ohio Department of Health Spokesperson Tess Pollock told The Evening Leader health officials reviewed the case — which involved a man who was fishing on the lake earlier this year — and determined it as a probable case of an illness linked to the water. The state has four classifications for illnesses — not a case, suspected case, probable case and confirmed case.
From the city that builds tanks, there is Aaron Smith.
From the town that has manufactured rushing yards with assembly-line efficiency through the years, there is D.J. Manning.
For three weeks, the St. Marys football team has faced a barrage of throws from three spread teams.
Now for something completely different.
The two best rushing teams and the two best rushers in the Western Buckeye League should make for a hard-hitting league match-up at Skip Baughman Stadium on Friday night.
