Jane P. Talan, 74

May 21, 2012

Jane P. Talan, 74, of Fairview Park, died on Thursday, May 17, 2012, at her residence.

She was born on July 15, 1937, in New Bremen, the daughter of Paul and Pauline (Vornholt) Gilberg.

On July 16, 1966, she married Albert Talan, and he preceded her in death on Nov. 22, 2009.

Survivors include her sons, Albert P. Talan of Fairview Park and David M. (Angelica) Talan of Virginia; her grandchildren, Ella and Logan; her siblings, Alice (Duane) Hartwig, John (Joyce) Gilberg and Bill Gilberg, all of New Bremen, and Kathryn (Art) Beel of Westlake.

Woman Killed In Farm Accident

WAPAKONETA — Deputies and investigators with the Auglaize County Sheriff’s Office are investigating a fatal farm accident Saturday east of St. Johns that claimed the life of a 56-year-old

At approximately 2:20 p.m., St. Johns Rescue Squad personnel and deputies from the sheriff’s office were dispatched to a residence east of St. Johns on U.S. 33, between the town of St. Johns and Ohio 65 in regard to a female found laying in a field and a driverless tractor still running in the field.

BASEBALL: Minster wins back-to-back district baseball titles

COLDWATER — The Cardiac Cats did it again.

Minster won its second straight district title with a 4-3 win over Crestview that — in typical Wildcat style this season — came down to a pulsepounding finish in the seventh inning.

“To be able to do this two years in a row, that’s something special,” Minster head coach Mike Wiss said.

SOFTBALL: Minster wins first-ever district softball crown

WAPAKONETA — The Minster softball team could start celebrating — and breathe a big sign of relief — when  pitcher Kayla Richards got Michelle Bruns to fly out to left field giving the Wildcats their first-ever Division IV district softball championship at Wapakoneta on Friday.

Minster used a five-run fifth inning and took advantage of five St. Henry errors to defeat the Redskins 7-5.

Local District Qualifies for Plan

ST. MARYS — A local school district found out on Friday that it qualified to develop a transportation plan through the state.

On Friday, St. Marys City Schools received notification from the Ohio Department of Transportation that it was selected to participate in the development of a School Travel Plan (STP) for the district.

Students Learn Reusing Lessons

ST. MARYS — Local third-grade students learned recycling lessons on Friday.

Bonnie Wurst with the Auglaize County Solid Waste Management District spoke to third-grade students at St. Marys Intermediate School on the importance of reducing their amount of trash.

“I want to do more today than just talk about what we recycle, I want to talk more about why we recycle,” Wurst said. “One of the reasons we recycle is to reduce the amount of trash that we make.”

Esther J. Schwartz, 87

Esther J. Schwartz, 87, of New Bremen, died on Friday, May 18, 2012, at 10:16 a.m. at Joint Township District Memorial Hospital, St. Marys.

She was born on May 14, 1925, near Coldwater. She was the daughter of George and Rose (Homan) Dues. On June 26, 1948, she married Leo H. Schwartz, who died on May 9, 2010.

Marva Joyce Olthouse, 89

Marva Joyce Olthouse, 89, died on Sunday, May 13, 2012.

Born in Muskegon, Mich., to Joseph Schneider and Hilda (Lintger) Schneider on May 17, 1922,  Marva was the second oldest of six siblings, Anne (Arthur Griffith), Carl (Ruth Kinney), Russell (Marjorie Rykse), Helen (Carroll Edwin Gates) and Joseph Junior (Roma Gallert).

Hilda insisted on a Christian education for all of her children, and Marva graduated from Grand Rapids Christian High.

Money Taken From Homes

CELINA — The Celina Police Department has received three reports over the last 10 days of money being stolen from homes in the residential area between East Wayne Street. In each of the cases cash money was taken from purses or other locations inside the home.
