Students Strut Their Stuff

ST. MARYS — St. Marys Memorial High School students dressed to the nines along with their families and friends packed the high school on Saturday to participate in the chamber’s annual prom promenade.

“The chamber’s been doing it for about 16 or 17 years,” St. Marys Area Chamber of Commerce Director Kelly Kill said. “It’s an opportunity for the kids to shine.”

She added prom promenade is an opportunity for the students to shine and show off all their effort.

WAPAKONETA —  Sometimes it’s not the team that makes the most plays that comes out on top.  Sometimes it’s the one that makes the fewest mistakes.

Friday night, that team was the St. Marys Roughriders.

St. Marys took advantage of a slew of miscues in the first three innings to post a 5-1 win over the rival Wapakoneta Redskins in a Western Buckeye League varsity baseball game at Wapakoneta High School.

SOFTBALL: Wapak run-rules St. Marys

Courtney Knippen and the Wapakoneta softball team pounced on St. Marys pitching from the start to take any drama out of the game against its Auglaize County rivals.

The Redskins sent 15 batters to the plate and scored 10 runs in the top of the first inning en route to a 15-1 run-rule victory in five innings at K.C. Geiger Park on Friday.

Knippen started and finished the scoring outburst with a pair of extra-base hits.

TENNIS: Riders edge Wapak, 3-2

The St. Marys boys tennis team edged Wapakoneta 3-2 in a Western Buckeye League tennis match on Friday to earn positioning for the upcoming WBL tournament.

The Riders’ Cole Brooks won second singles over Wapak’s Joey Jose in three sets, 7-5, 3-6, 6-4.

Three Riders, Minster's Gusching to play in football all-star game

VAN WERT — St. Marys will have three seniors playing in the Western Buckeye League vs. MAC/NWC Football All-Star Game on Friday, June 8.

St. Marys senior wideout and defensive back Tre Sherman, running back D.J. Manning and center Austin Rupard.

Minster’s Daniel Gusching, a 6-foot-2, 215-pound wideout and linebacker will play for the MAC-NWC team. Gusching was named the Associated Press’ Division IV defensive player of the year as a senior.

Spencerville head coach John Zerbe, who will coach the NWC-MAC team.

“Leader Look Back” is a collection of stories and headlines from 75, 50 and 25 years ago this week. This week’s edition examines stories from April 17 to 23, 1937, 1962 and 1987.

75 years ago: Four hundred chicks died when a brooder stove exploded in a garage at the Guy Whitehead premises, located along South Beech Street. The garage was used as a brooder house.

William Stolthe, of New Knoxville, celebrated his 80th birthday.

St. Marys District Adds New Bus to Fleet

ST. MARYS — There is a new bus No. 20 in town.

With the trade-in of an old bus and the purchase of a new one, the St. Marys City Schools’ school bus fleet has gained a new member.

On Thursday, Cardinal Bus Sales and Service dropped off a new school bus and picked up an older bus. It was a trade of bus No. 20 with a new bus No. 20.

“We should have it on the road by early next week,” Transportation Supervisor Dan Grothause said. “Tuesday may be its first trip.”

Wilda Miars, 85

April 27, 2012

Wilda Miars, 85, formerly of 04521 Auglaize County Road 33-A in St. Marys, died at 9:12 p.m. Thursday, April 26, 2012, at Memorial Hospital of Union County in Marysville.

She was born on March 18, 1927, in St. Marys, to Vernon and Ireta (Seib) Schmehl.

On May 24, 1947, she married Gail V. Miars, who died on Sept. 20, 1995.

Elizabeth Rosina King, 92

April 27, 2012

Elizabeth Rosina King, 92, of Countryside Continuing Care Center, went home to be with her Lord on Friday, April 27, 2012.

She was born in New Bremen on Aug. 19, 1919, to Harry and Bertha (Huelsmeyer) Wiehe. Elizabeth married the love of her life, James P. King, in New Bremen on Oct. 12, 1940. They were married for 57 years.

Elizabeth was a homemaker raising three sons, John R. King, Thomas H. King and David J. King.
