WAPAKONETA — The defense laid out its case on Wednesday, with a handful of witnesses testifying on behalf of a St. Marys optometrist charged with rape.
Clarinda Wine, Douglas Wine’s wife, testified about the events surrounding Oct. 12 and 13, 2009. She told Ritchey Hollenbaugh, Wine’s attorney, that she did not notice anything unusual the next morning when the woman left to return home to Florida. She said when she woke up, Wine was in bed with her.
ST. MARYS — After holding a meeting Wednesday evening, a local school official will be requesting new architectural plans regarding tennis courts.
The St. Marys Board of Education’s Building and Grounds Committee met to discuss options about the district’s tennis courts during a meeting Tuesday at the district offices.
CELINA — St. Marys’ Kelly Heitkamp bent a 35-yard rainbow from the right wing just over the reach of the goalkeeper’s outstretched arms with 35:42 left in the second half with what proved to be the game winner in a 1-0 Division II district semifinal win at Celina on Wednesday night.
Through all the highs of record-setting rushing nights and a redemptive win over Celina to the lows of disappointing second halves against Kenton, Defiance , Wapak and O-G — St. Marys has a chance to improve its record by four games over last season and get to the .500 mark to end the season it hosts Shawnee at Skip Baughman Stadium on Friday night.
“This is important for us, to close this out,” St. Marys head coach Greg Phillips said.

Donald D. “Barney” Barnes, 82, of St. Marys, formerly of Spencerville, died at 8:50 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 24, 2011, at the St. Marys Living Center.
He was born on July 14, 1929, in Auglaize County, the son of Alfred and Mabel (Greymyre) Barnes, and they preceded him in death.
On Oct. 27, 1973, he married Hazel Elrod, and she preceded him in death on Aug. 25, 1996.

WAPAKONETA — The rape trial of a St. Marys optometrist started on Tuesday with the alleged victim recounting the events of an October night in 2009.
ST. MARYS — Ghosts, vampires, fairies and movie characters gathered in the Chestnut Street parking lot Tuesday night for the annual Rotary Club Halloween Parade and costume contest.
Organizer Deb Zwez said the event provides an opportunity for area children to dress up in their costume, in addition to going out for Beggar’s Night.
“It gives kids in the community a chance to show off their Halloween costume,” she said. “It’s a chance for kids to show how cute they all are.”
NEW BREMEN — Area councilors voted to rescind a measure they passed at their previous meeting.
New Bremen Mayor Jeff Pape noted councilors moved too fast with passing the Community Reinvestment Area agreement resolution with Brookside Laboratories as an emergency during their previous meeting, and councilors moved to pass other related pieces during their meeting Tuesday evening.
Village Solicitor Steve Smith suggested councilors rescind the previous legislation.
