Seventeen St. Marys students named academic All-WBL

The Western Buckeye League named its 2011-2012 WBL Academic All-League award winners late last week for student-athletes who excel both on the field and in the classroom.

St. Marys had 17 students earn the honor.

Juniors must carry a 3.75 grade point average and earned at least two varsity letters.

St. Marys juniors Emily Brown, Kevin Dammeyer, Nick Durkee, Mitch Fowler, Kelly Heitkamp, Colleen Magee, Neil Perry and Logan Simons were named to the list.

Seniors must carry a 3.75 GPA with at least three varsity letters in WBL sports.

Softball tournament game moved to Tuesday; St. Marys, Minster and New Bremen baseball play Wednesday

NEW BREMEN — Late afternoon storms postponed the Division IV sectional softball final  between New Bremen and St. Henry scheduled for Monday.

The Cardinals and Redskins will play tonight at 5 p.m. at New Bremen. The winner advances to the district tournament at Wapakoneta on Tuesday, May 15 against the winner of Ada and Hardin Northern.

St. Henry won the regular season match-up 10-0 on April 19.

Minster will play in district action at Wapak on Wednesday, May 16 at 5 p.m. against the wnner of today’s Lima Perry-Ridgemont game.

Cards Take Challenge

NEW BREMEN — At 13-years-old, Rachel Scott knew she would affect the lives of others, tracing her hands on the back of her dresser and writing, “These hands belong to Rachel Joy Scott and will some day touch millions of people’s hearts.”

Four years later, on April 20, 1999, Rachel was the first of 13 people killed at Columbine High School.

Rider Heads To Nationals

ST. MARYS — A local girl has moved on in a speech competition, after winning the state level this weekend.

On Saturday in Lima, Clare Caywood competed at the state level of the God, Flag and Country speech contest.

“I was surprised because the boy who spoke before me was really good, and I was ready to get second place,” Clare said of her first-place win at state.

After winning first, Clare will move on to the national level.

“Next, I go to the national competition in Grand Rapids, Mich., on July 7,” she said.

Gladys M. McGee, 86

Gladys M. McGee, 86, of 1125 Shimp Drive, Celina, died at 8:05 a.m. Sunday, May 6, 2012, at the Celina Manor.

She was born on Oct. 11, 1925, in Celina, to Thomas B. and Lillie (Coate) McGee, and they preceded her in death.

She is survived by a sister; several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her four brothers; three sisters.

Charles Gary Kitchen, 68

Charles Gary Kitchen, 68, of 16244 Ohio 66 North in rural St. Marys, died on Friday, May 4, 2012, at his residence.

He was born on April 24, 1944, in Lawrence County, Ky., to Milton G. Kitchen and Lydia Newsome, and they preceded him in death.

On March 28, 1964, in Olive Hill, Ky., he married Calista Middleton, and she preceded him in death on Feb. 12.

Suspect Arrested In Burglary

ST. MARYS — An Allen County man was arrested Saturday after fleeing a home in rural Auglaize County.

According to a news release issued by Auglaize County Sheriff Al Solomon, deputies arrested a Lima man on Saturday after he was chased out of a home on Sante Fe Line Road. At approximately 8:53 p.m. Saturday, deputies responded to Sante Fe Line Road on a report of a house burglary in progress.  The suspect had fled from the home after being stopped by the homeowner.

Suspects Arrested With Handgun

CELINA — Two area men face felony charges after Celina police officers allegedly found them in possession of a handgun that has the serial numbers filed off.  

The two men were suspect in vehicle break-ins in the area of Wilkins Street.

At 3:45 a.m. Monday, officers were responding to a call of two suspects going through a vehicle parked at 606 Wilkins St. In route they were flagged down by a subject near Logan and Elm streets. That subject, Joseph Vian, was the son of one of the victims.

BATH TOWNSHIP —  Celina’s powerful offense, paired with a strong performance in the pitching circle by Kaitlynn Kerr, muscled Celina past their Western Buckeye League rivals and into the sectional title game.

BASEBALL: New Knoxville bows out of tourney

MINSTER — Four runs in the first inning by the Fort Recovery Indians was all they needed as they defeated the New Knoxville baseball team 4-1 in the opening game of the Division IV sectional tournament held at Hanover Street Park in Minster.

St. Henry defeated Marion Local 1-0 in the second game despite being no-hit until the seventh inning. Second-seeded New Bremen will face the Redskins this week in a sectional final.
