ST. MARYS — A nationally recognized science firm has whittled down potential solutions that could help Grand Lake St. Marys.
Battelle recently unveiled a comprehensive, draft report that details its recommendations to help restore the water quality of Grand Lake St. Marys as well as how to limit phosphorus from entering the body of water. Earlier this year, members of the Grand Lake Restoration Commission tabbed the firm to review the more than 70 of proposals it received regarding possible solutions to help the lake.

D.J. Manning became the first St. Marys Memorial running back to eclipse 2,000 yards in a single season in school history.

Minster enters the postseason for the 11th time in school history on Saturday night when it travels to Springfield Catholic Central. The Wildcats' playoff tradition began back in 1987 under Ken Newland, who led Minster to five straight playoff appearances, an 8-5 postseason record and the 1989 Division V state championship.
Newland took Minster to the playoffs for first five years as head coach, a run of success based on a powerful running game.
Area players dotted the recently released all-district volleyball teams from District 8.

St. Marys senior Jenny Brown and Rider senior Cierra Anderson were both named First Team All-District 8.
Mark A. Brandewie, 73, of 276 S. Hanover St., Minster, died at 3:34 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2011, at OSU Medical Center in Columbus.
He was born on Dec. 18, 1937, in Egypt, to Carl and Odelia (Cron) Brandewie, and they preceded him in death.
On Oct. 10, 1959, in Minster, he married Sharon L. Bachman, and she preceded him in death on Aug. 7, 2009.
He is survived by his children, Jeff Brandewie, Jon (Sue) Brandewie, Jennifer Salm and Jaime (Rob) Hemmelgarn, all of Minster; 12 grandchildren; three brothers; a sister-in-law.
Donald E. Shroyer, 64, of Wapakoneta, died at 12:25 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2011, at St. Rita’s Medical Center in Lima.
He was born on April 5, 1947, in Bellefontaine, to Donald C. and Jennie (Miller) Shroyer, and they preceded him in death.
On Jan. 14, 1967, he married Patricia K. Evans, and she survives in Wapakoneta.
He is also survived by a son, Jason E. (Karen) Shroyer of Bellbrook; three grandchildren; five siblings; two sisters-in-law; many nieces and nephews.
Donna J. Haines, 80, of 1414 Nagel St., St. Marys, died at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2011, at Joint Township District Memorial Hospital following a brief illness.
She was born on Jan. 18, 1931, in St. Marys, the daughter of Adrian “Hap” and Grace (Langsdon) Howell.
She married Richard Haines II on June 10, 1951, and he survives at the residence.
CELINA — A Korean man accused of causing a collision that killed a 3-year-old Minster girl last month recently appeared in Mercer County Common Pleas Court.
A grand jury indicted Jinghao Xu, 50, of Hamilton, on one count of vehicular homicide, a fourth-degree felony. Xu appeared in court on Oct. 25 and is scheduled to appear for an arraignment hearing at 10:30 a.m. Nov. 9, where he is expected to enter a plea to the charge.
