NEW BREMEN — More than 200 area veterans were honored Friday morning at a Veterans Day assembly at New Bremen Elementary.
“As Americans, we identify today, Nov. 11, as Veteran’s Day, to reflect, remember and honor those who have served in the United States Armed Forces,” Elementary Principal Diane Kramer said. “So today we honor them and all of you for your sacrifices on our behalf.”
ST. MARYS — Local high school students paid tribute to those who have served in the military as part of the first Veterans Day celebration in their new building.
Memorial High School students, teachers and administrators invited veterans to visit their school during a ceremony on Friday.
Memorial High School social studies teacher kicked off the ceremony by welcoming those in attendance and reciting the history of Veterans Day and its beginnings as Armistice Day.
C. Donald Douglas, 68, of Wapakoneta, died at 1 a.m. Friday, Nov. 11, 2011, at his son’s home in Wapakoneta.
He was born on April 27, 1943, in Long Hollow, W.Va., the son of Miner Cecil and Hattie May (Thornton) Douglas, who preceded him in death. On April 20, 1969, he married Nelia Lou Hudnall, and she died on July 30, 2008.
Mary Margaret Ramsey, 99, of 405 N. Spruce St., St. Marys, died at 11:56 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 10, 2011, at the St. Marys Living
Center.
Funeral arrangements are being completed at the Miller-Long and Folk Funeral Home, 314 W. High St., St. Marys.
Garet O. Schmehl, 20, of 17906 State Route 66 in St. Marys, died at 2:15 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 10, 2011, at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, from injuries suffered in an automobile accident that occurred on Nov. 7.
He was born on Aug. 29, 1991, in St. Marys, to Tony and Renee (Craft) Schmehl.
He is survived by his parents, Tony and Renee Schmehl of St. Marys; by a sister, Megan Schmehl; by his paternal grandmother, Dolores Schmehl of St. Marys; by his maternal grandmother, Ruth Craft of St. Marys; by numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
Margaret Ritter, 70, of 212 E. Front St., New Bremen, died at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 10, 2011, at her home.
She was born on Feb. 26, 1941, in Wellington, New Zealand. She was the daughter of Dennis and Johannah Horgan, both of whom preceded her in death. On Feb. 12, 1965, she married William Ritter, who survives in New Bremen.
WAPAKONETA — Troopers from the Wapakoneta Post of the Ohio Highway Patrol are investigating an injury crash involving a pedestrian.
According to a crash report, troopers were called to Cemetery Road, near U.S. 33, at 6:39 a.m. Friday and found that Safee Thompson, 28, of Philadelphia, parked his trailer facing south on Cemetery Road. He exited the vehicle and began walking to the rear of it in an attempt to make contact with the tractor stopped behind him.

MINSTER — High school football teams almost everywhere meet near the goalline after games in communal celebration or shared misery.
Usually the players take a knee and hear one voice — that of the head coach. Depending on the outcome, that speech is usually either irate or inspiring.
The Minster Wildcats take a different tact.
The Wildcats' smashmouth toughness on the field may be traditional, but Minster lets everyone share in the responsibility of talking after games in a way that's pretty far from old school.
