NEW BREMEN — After a storm blew through the county late June, a local village is reviewing its response plan.
In his report, Mayor Jeff Pape noted he along with other village representatives discussed last month’s storm with county officials.
Florence Paulus, 85, of Celina, died at 4:23 a.m. Sunday, July 22, 2012, at the Gardens of Celina.
She was born on Dec. 5, 1926, in St. Henry, to James Clifford Jacobs and Mary Louise Rafferty, and they preceded her in death.
In April 1980, she married Norbert Paulus, and he preceded her in death.
Raymond H. Poppe, 92, formerly of Botkins, passed away at 2:30 p.m. Monday, July 23, 2012, at Otterbein St. Marys Retirement Home, 11300 Circle Drive, St. Marys.
Raymond was born on Sept. 22, 1919, in Clay County, Ark., the son of August and Rosa (Leirer) Poppe, and they preceded him in death.
On Nov. 23, 1946, he married Estella Sweetman, and she passed away on Oct. 12, 1994.
CELINA — Citing low lake levels and boater safety concerns, the organizers of the Governor's Cup Regatta decided to cancel this year's race.
"It was an awful decision," Regatta President Allen Baskett told The Evening Leader this morning. "We've been watching the situation during the last few weeks, hoping to have days like this that would really make a difference. We still had money to raise and we felt like we could do it but then we came up against this obstacle."
NEW BREMEN — After village council members recently moved a property to its Community Improvement Corporation, members of the CIC discussed the property during their meeting Monday evening.
First, during their meeting Monday evening, members of the New Bremen CIC heard from Keith Quellhorst with Que’s Barber Shop.
Quellhorst noted design plans for the look of the building he is currently operating inside — the former New Bremen Parks Department building.
ST. MARYS — The future of one of the staples of the city of St. Marys’ skyline remains in limbo.
During Monday night’s meeting, St. Marys City Councilors approved a recommendation by a 4-1 vote to move forward with the demolition of the former power plant’s smoke stack. John Bubp, the 1st Ward Councilor, voted against the measure and two city councilors — Dennis Vossler and Jim Harris — were absent.

ST. MARYS — Children at Grand Lake St. Marys were jumping, dodging, racing and sliding through obstacle courses Saturday afternoon during a day of campground activities.
The Grand Lake VIP Association held its second annual Kids Day at Grand Lake St. Marys State Park Saturday, showcasing the fun that can be found at the campground. The event featured a moonwalk and an inflatable obstacle course, a variety of games, including corn hole, hillbilly golf, a toilet toss and washer toss and an outdoor movie at night.
CELINA — RC boat racers gathered at Eastview Park in Celina over the weekend for two days of fun and racing at the Can Am Summer Shootout.
Vince Amore II, of Gas RC Products, a sponsor of the event, said the Can Am Summer Shootout, an International Model Power Boat Association (IMPBA) event, attracts racers from across the region.
“We have participants from Indiana, we have participants from Ohio, some from London, Ontario, the Detroit metro area,” he said.
Karen R. Pack, 65, of Wapakoneta, died at 8:26 p.m. Friday, July 20, 2012, at the St. Rita’s Medical Center.
She was born on May 3, 1947, in Lima, the daughter of John U. and Betty (Kimmel) Martin Sr., and they preceded her in death.
