Joseph R. Otting, 77

September 17, 2012

Joseph R. Otting, 77, of 236 Garfield St., Minster, died on Friday, Sept. 14, 2012, at Joint Township District Memorial Hospital in St. Marys. 

He was born on Nov. 27, 1934, in Darke County, to Raymond and Loretta (Duval) Otting, and they preceded him in death.

He is survived by his wife, Janice (Leugers) Otting of Minster; two daughters, Lisa Turnbaugh of Houston, Texas, and Theresa Dillard of LaPorte, Texas.

He was preceded in death by a son, Joseph James; a brother.

Private services will be held.

FOOTBALL: Riders' big 2nd half comeback falls short to Bath

BATH TOWNSHIP — St. Marys couldn’t stop Bath quarterback Doug Sanders in the Wildcats’ 50-28 win over the Roughriders on Friday night.

Not as Bath built a 29-0 lead.

Not when St. Marys needed a stop to continue its improbable second-half comeback attempt.

Sanders threw for 269 yards and rushed for 192 yards in Bath’s topsy-turvy victory. When Bath’s defense struggled to hold a lead in the second half, Sanders responded with touchdown runs of 61 and 31 yards in the fourth quarter.

FOOTBALL: St. Henry upsets No. 6 Minster, 35-21

ST HENRY — What started to look like a blowout when the Minster Wildcats scored twice in the first six minutes of the game, turned into something else altogether.

St. Henry came back and won a Midwest Athletic Conference 35-21 victory.

“We stuck to the plan and give credit to our kids for not folding, they could have easily folded there at 14-0 with Minster having all the momentum,” said St. Henry coach Jeff Starkey. “It was great by our kids just hanging in there.”

FOOTBALL: New Bremen breaks through with first win

NEW BREMEN – For the first time in a year and a half the New Bremen football team is able to celebrate a victory.

The Cardinals scored  touchdowns in the second and fourth quarters to defeat the Parkway Panthers 13-6 in front of a homecoming crowd to snap a 15-game losing streak that dated back to the 2010 season.

Tristin Hoffmaster's fourth-quarter six-yard touchdown run proved to be the game winner for the Cardinals.

New Bremen's other score came on a Garrett Westerbeck to Justin Heitkamp nine-yard touchdown pass.

FOOTBALL ROUND-UP: Celina stuns Wapak, 24-21

CELINA —  Celina emerged from a Western Buckeye League struggle with Wapkoneta with a 24-21 win.

Wapakoneta was leading by 4 points about midway through the fourth quarter when Celina started a drive on its own 21 yard line.

A systematic drive with passes of four, nine, 20, 12, 18, six and a eight yards was enough to score the game wining touchdown. The 14-play, 79-yard drive which was capped by a jailbreak screen from Bilger to junior wide receiver Braeken Bader for the touchdown.

Students Get Hooked

ST. MARYS — Despite the drizzly weather, local students spent their Friday learning an alternative activity that they could turn to instead of making destructive decisions.

Seventh-grade students at St. Marys Middle School spent time at the East Bank of Grand Lake St. Marys to participate in Hooked on Fishing-Not on Drugs, which Guidance Counselor Rebecca Moore noted is a national recognized drug-prevention program of the Future Fisherman Foundation.

Eagles Shut Out Reds, Bridge OK’d

“Leader Look Back” is a collection of stories and headlines from 75, 50 and 25 years ago this week. This week’s edition examines stories from Sept. 11-17, 1937, 1962 and 1987.

75 years ago: The Eagles shut out the Wapakoneta Reds 1-0 in the final game of the season for both squads.

Season tickets for Roughriders football games went on sale for $1.75. The Roughriders hosted Liberty of the Hancock County League in the first home game of the year.

The South End Wonders defeated the West End Reds 3-2.

MTV Shows Spirit

ST. MARYS — With a $1,000 prize on the line, a group of Memorial High School students are showcasing the pride of the St. Marys community in a spirit video they created for Alltel’s second annual Yards 4 Youth competition.

The students in Andrew Klosterman’s Memorial Television class prepared the Yards 4 Youth video, focusing on how St. Marys shows its school pride.

GIRLS SOCCER: Celina edges St. Marys, 1-0

CELINA — The heated St. Marys-Celina girls soccer rivalry produced a winner for the first time since 2009.

Taylor Guingrich’s early long strike held up the rest of the game, giving Celina a 1-0 win over St. Marys on Thursday night after the two rivals played to 1-1 ties in both 2011 and 2010.
