“Leader Look Back” is a collection of stories and headlines from 75, 50 and 25 years ago this week. This week’s edition examines stories from Aug. 7-13, 1937, 1962 and 1987.
75 years ago: Approximately 3,500 yards of broken concrete from St. Marys and Wapakoneta roads was used as rip-rap at Lake St. Marys in an effort to prevent erosion. Lake Foreman John Sunderland noted $1,900 was appropriated for dredging the lake.
ST. MARYS — Shoppers braved the cooler temperatures and cloudy skies Friday afternoon for an annual downtown St. Marys sale.
The SummerFest Super Sidewalk Sales kicked off at 10 a.m. Friday along Spring Street and will run throughout the weekend. Replay Consignment Shop Owner Rachelle Breland said the weather conditions caused her to limit the amount of clothing she placed on the sidewalk.
ST. MARYS — An annual fundraiser benefitting a county agency kicked off this week, enabling residents to nab a few deals while helping out the Auglaize County Council on Aging.
The Auglaize County Council on Aging (ACCA) opened its annual garage sale Thursday.
Activities Director Evelyn Hartley noted she has been preparing for the garage sale for a month.
“We started collecting items the first week of July,” Hartley said. “We got items from anybody and everybody.”
Eleanor L. Wolfe, 91, of 402 S. Main St., New Knoxville, died on Thursday, Aug. 16, 2012, in Cridersville.
Funeral arrangements are being completed at the Miller-Long and Folk Funeral Home in St. Marys.
Vera A. Fleagle, 80, of 3211 Shore Drive in Celina, died at 10:45 a.m. Friday, Aug. 10, 2012, at Joint Township District Memorial Hospital in St. Marys.
She was born on Aug. 10, 1932, in Napolean, to Harold and Vera (Sloke) Rudgal. On Feb. 28, 1953, in Napolean, she married Dr. Robert K. Fleagle, who died on Jan. 8, 2001.
Hanford Martin “Hank,” 67, of Middlesboro, Ky., passed away on Friday, Aug. 10, 2012, at his home.
He was born in Clear Creek, Ky., on March 22, 1945, to the late Canis Dee Martin and Gladys Mason Martin. He was a member of Hensley Chapel Baptist Church.
Mr. Martin worked at Trim Trends in Spencerville for 30 years. He loved his family and the Lord.
ST. MARYS — Music filled the air in Memorial Park Thursday night as SummerFest kicked off under picture-perfect conditions.
While the threat of rain forced the opening ceremony under the entertainment tent, a cool breeze and temperatures in the mid-70s greeted those in attendance for Supper and Sounds and the kick off of SummerFest. St. Marys Area Chamber of Commerce Director Kelly Kill said the evening was perfect.
WAPAKONETA — A complaint, the nature of which is not being released at this time, has been made against a long-time Wapakoneta physician.
Wapakoneta Police Chief Russ Hunlock told the newspaper this morning that a Wapakoneta woman made a complaint to his office about Dr. Tom Freytag at the end of May or late June.
NEW BREMEN — Eleven young women displayed their creativity and intelligence to a packed James F. Dicke Auditorium Wednesday night in hopes of being named the 2012 Bremenfest Queen.
The annual Bremenfest Queen Pageant featured a slew of talent in which contestants were judged by a panel of six judges on an introduction, a talent, a corporate sponsor promotion, an interview and a final walk through.
