NEW BREMEN — Young anglers lined the Miami and Erie Canal in New Bremen Saturday morning for an annual festival fishing derby.
The Bremenfest Fishing Derby kicked off at 10:30 a.m. Saturday and ran until noon, and the young anglers found success pulling large and small fish from the canal, including a variety of catfish and bass. While small fish were caught on a regular basis during the derby, talk of a 26-inch catfish being caught circled the canal.
NEW BREMEN — Teams of friends and families pulled out their best chili recipes to serve to festival-goers Saturday morning for an annual fundraiser.
The New Bremen EMS Chili Cook-Off kicked off at 8 a.m. Saturday at Crown Pavilion. The event, which raises money for the New Bremen EMS, is held during Bremenfest and brings crowds of people out to make and taste chili.
Jon Moore, Matt Opperman, Crag Nelson, Steve Greber, Matt Tontrep and Josh Ziggy come to compete in the chili cook-off every year, traveling from across the country to attend the event.
50 Years Ago This Week – 1962
Esta Mae Colwell, 92, of Mendon, died on Thursday, Aug. 16, 2012, at her daughter’s residence.
She was born on Oct. 3, 1919, in Yerkes, Ky., to Sam and Para Lee (Caldwell) Colwell, and they preceded her in death.
On Sept. 25, 1936, she married Hershel Colwell, and he preceded her in death on May 22, 1997.
Mary L. Herzog, 41, of 220 Beech St., St. Marys, died at 5:25 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 16, 2012, at St. Rita’s Medical center in Lima.
She was born on May 22, 1971, in Defiance, to John Henry and Arbutis Mary (Gayheart) Walter.
“Leader Look Back” is a collection of stories and headlines from 75, 50 and 25 years ago this week. This week’s edition examines stories from Aug. 14-20, 1937, 1962 and 1987.
75 years ago: New speed limits were implemented around the city. New 25 mph limits were implemented outside of businesses and in closely built sections of town. The new 25 mph limit also was in effect around schools and during periods when students were walking to and from school.
ST. MARYS — The St. Marys Community Public Library Building Committee met Friday afternoon to address a list of concerns and prioritize its projects.
As discussed in the August Board of Trustees meeting, the air conditioning bearing above St. Marys Community Public Library Director Sue Pittman’s office was recommended to be replaced.
ST. MARYS — At St. Marys Primary School this year, local students will have the opportunity to use some new technology in the form of tablet computers.
Located in a locked, mobile case are 30 iPad2s with cases that teachers at the school will be able to utilize in their classrooms.
CELINA — Wapakoneta's Caleb Acheson never appeared to be in control on any of the four sudden death playoff holes to decide second place at the Celina Bulldog Invitational at Fox's Den on Friday.
He was the last of the four players standing four playoff holes later thanks to his stellar short game and scrambling ability, however.
