Vendors' Market Set For Saturday

ST. MARYS — This weekend visitors to Grand Lake St. Marys State Park can help a local nonprofit group in its mission to providing new additions to the attraction that help keep tourists coming back.

The Grand Lake VIP Association will be hosting its first-ever vendors’ market on Saturday in the campgrounds. The event, which is scheduled to run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., will be staged along the main road of the campgrounds.

WAPAKONETA — Two St. Marys graduates were named the royalty of the 160th Auglaize County Fair Monday evening.

When Sarah Wilker’s name was announced as the 2012 Auglaize County Junior Fair queen, she was surprised, even shedding a few tears after her emotional win.

“I was shocked,” Wilker said. “It’s definitely a great honor, and I’m very honored to represent Auglaize County.”

During her reign as the 2012 queen, Wilker said she will have to travel around the state.

Jane Elliott Weimer, 93

Jane Elliott Weimer, 93, of St. Marys, died at 3:15 a.m. Thursday, July 26, 2012.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Meyer Community Room at Otterbein St. Marys.

Visitation will be held from 1:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday at Otterbein St. Marys.

Arrangements are being handled by Hanson-Neely Funeral Home in Ada and are incomplete at this time.

Raymond G. “Junior” Goetz Jr., 87

July 31, 2012

Raymond G. “Junior” Goetz Jr., 87, of Spencerville, died at 6:15 a.m. Monday, July 30, 2012, at his residence surrounded by his loving family, following a short illness.

He was born on March 31, 1925, in Jennings Township, Van Wert County, the son of Raymond C. and Jessie M. Gilbert Goetz, and they preceded him in death. His stepfather, Emlyn O. Jones, also preceded him in death.

On May 11, 1946, he married C. Annette Kohlhorst, and she preceded him in death on Dec. 31, 2009.

Robert C. Cisco Sr., 87

July 31, 2012

Robert C. Cisco Sr., 87, of St. Marys, died at 2:30 p.m. Monday, July 30, 2012, surrounded by his family.

He was born on Jan. 11, 1925, in Allen County, to O.V. Bud and Mary “Mollie” (Sherer) Cisco, and they preceded him in death.

On Aug. 22, 1945, he married Elnora Weyant, and she survives. They were together for almost 67 years.

Joe R. Pepple, 86

July 31, 2012

Joe R. Pepple, 86, died at 4:05 p.m. Monday, July 30, 2012, at Otterbein Cridersville.

He was born on Oct. 1, 1925, in Union Township, Auglaize County, to Colby William and Gladys Irene (Day) Pepple, and they preceded him in death.

On Nov. 21, 1946, in Pandora, he married Agnes S. Burry, and she survives in Waynesfield.

After a period of stability and playoff success brought by nationally-recruited, record-setting quarterbacks and gaudy numbers put up by a handful of running backs, the Western Buckeye League will have a lot of new faces in key spots in what should be a wide-open race.

The Midwest Athletic Conference had another banner year with five playoff teams, two teams in state championship games and Marion Local adding a fifth state title. The league has a quartet of teams that look like state title contenders again this season.

GLSCL Baseball: Mariners finish season with a flourish

CELINA — Trevor Kill and the Grand Lake Mariners both finished the season on quite an upswing.

The Grand Lake Mariners ended their 2012 campaign on an upswing, taking two from the Southern Ohio Copperheads, 4-3 in 11 innnings and 9-8, on Sunday at Jim Hoess Field in Celina.

Grand Lake finished the season winning seven of its eight final games for a 15-23 record. The outscored opponents 61-35 in final eight games, after being outscored 212-145 in the first 30 games of the season.

Fair Opens

WAPAKONETA — The 160th version of the Auglaize County Fair is now in full swing.

“It’s going terrific,” Auglaize County Fair Manager Fred Piehl told The Evening Leader Sunday morning. “They are still going in and we are putting the finishing touches on everything.”

Sunday’s schedule saw a full slate of events, including the 4-H Style Review, Open Class Beef Breeding Show, wrestling and truck wars.

Piehl said the 4-H members in the county are one of the largest contingents in the state.
