50 Years Ago This Week – 1962: This week in 1962, Memorial High School celebrated Homecoming weekend in fashion with a 27-8 victory on the football field over the Van Wert Cougars. 

The Roughriders scored their initial touchdown late in the opening period after receiving a punt near midfield.  On the third play of the series, Terry Young ripped through an opening in the offensive line and raced for the 50-yard touchdown.  Tom Hollman’s PAT run was a success, and the Roughriders were in charge 8-0.

LIMA —  St. Marys’ furious rally to extend its season came up just short in a fifth game.

Defiance won the fourth game and then staved off St. Marys in the deciding fifth to oust the Roughriders from the Division II sectional volleyball tournament on Tuesday at Lima Senior High School with a 21-25, 26-24, 18-25, 25-18, 17-15 win.

Geneva M. Kerber, 92

Geneva M. Kerber, 92, formerly of Minster, of Findlay, died at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2012, at her daughter’s residence in Findlay.

She was born on March 12, 1920, in Screven, Ga., to John and Katherine (Brandewie) Dues, and they preceded her in death.

In 1946, she married William Kerber, and he preceded her in death in 1953. In 1956, she married Paul Kerber, and he preceded her in death on Dec. 6, 1977.

Hobert D. Harmon, 94

Hobert D. Harmon, 94, of New Bremen, formerly of Dayton, passed away peacefully on Monday, Oct. 15, 2012, at the Elmwood Community Assisted Living Center in New Bremen.

Hobert is survived by two nieces, Saundra (Larry) Hirschfeld of Anna and Jane (Dennis) Gruebmeyer of New Bremen; three nephews, Bill (Jane) Moore of New Bremen, Elgon (Charlotte) Hornback of New Carlisle and Ricky (Sharon) Hornback of Dayton; several great-nieces and nephews.

Ruth A. Byers, 91

Ruth A. Byers, 91, of 925 Wilkins St., Celina, died at 1:40 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2012, at the Celina Manor Nursing Home.

She was born on April 11, 1921, in Center Township, in Mercer County, to Oscar and Opal (Fleenor) Buck, and they preceded her in death.

On June 6, 1949, she married James Marion Byers, and he preceded her in death in 1955.

Woman Dies From Injuries

WAPAKONETA — A 62-year-old Texas woman died Monday evening from injuries suffered earlier that day in a two-vehicle collision on Interstate 75.

Lorraine Harrison, of San Antonio, Texas, died Monday evening at Lima Memorial Hospital after a semitrailer and car collided Monday on I-75 near the U.S. 33 exit in Wapakoneta, Wapakoneta Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP) Commander Lt. Scott Carrico said.Two other people involved in the collision are still in the hospital as of Tuesday afternoon.

Frederick “Fred” A. Schulze, 63

Frederick “Fred” A. Schulze, 63, of S. Main St., Minster, died on Monday, Oct. 15, 2012, at Joint Township District Memorial Hospital in St. Marys.

He was born on Nov. 16, 1948, in Fort Loramie, to Frederick and Mary (Streacker) Schulze, and they preceded him in death.

On Sept. 25, 1971, at St. John The Baptist Catholic Church in Maria Stein, he married Karen (Bertke) Schulze, and she survives.
