Donna Jo Schell, 44

September 10, 2012

Donna Jo Schell, 44, of 255 Marsh Drive, St. Marys, died at 3:50 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 9, 2012, at Golden Living Center – Valley in St. Marys.

She was born on June 29, 1968, in St. Marys, to Donald and Retha (Orick) Schell, and her mother preceded her in death. Her father survives in St. Marys.

She is also survived by a brother; a sister.

Rites are scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Miller Funeral Home, 1605 Celina Road (Ohio 703 West Chapel), St. Marys.

Burial will follow at Resthaven Memory Gardens near Moulton.

Paul R. Maltinsky, 92

Paul R. Maltinsky, 92, formerly of 240 N. Main St., Minster, died at 5:20 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, 2012, at Elmwood of New Bremen.

He was born on Oct. 3, 1919, in Wheeling, W.Va., to former immigrants from Austria-Hungary Paul and Anna (Stanek) Malatinsky, and they preceded him in death.

On July 31, 1948, at St. Michael Church in Fort Loramie, he married Ann M. Barhorst, and she preceded him in death on Dec. 25, 2008.

Othmar J. Homan, 83

Othmar J. Homan, 83, of 1731 Rolfes Road, Maria Stein, died at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, 2012, at his home.

He was born on Feb. 24, 1929, in Maria Stein, to Lawrence and Mary (Schulte) Homan, and they preceded him in death.

On May 16, 1953, in Cassella, he married Rita A. Tumbusch, and she preceded him in death on June 18, 2004. 

Dorothy Mae Barber, 95

September 10, 2012

Dorothy Mae Barber, 95, of Mendon, died on Friday, Sept. 7, 2012, at Colonial Nursing Home in Rockford.

She was born on Jan. 23, 1917, in Mercer County, to Cecil Yewey and Stella Shanklin, and they preceded her in death.

On Oct. 16, 1943, she married J. Vernon Barber, and he preceded her in death on Dec. 20, 2007.

She is survived by three daughters, Shirley (Steve) Bell of Celina, Marilyn (James) Dwenger of Celina and Joanne (Dan) Lampert of Anna; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren.

FOOTBALL: Elida downs Roughriders, 27-3

ELIDA — Defense dominated the second half  of the St. Marys-Elida football game.

That was just fine to Elida head coach Jason Carpenter and his Bulldogs, who had built up a 17-point cushion and  had a swarming defense stymying the Roughrider offense.

The Elida defense held the Roughriders under 140 total yards of offense in a dominating 27-3 victory at Kraft Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

FOOTBALL UPDATE: St. Marys-Elida, New Bremen-Minster to resume Saturday

ELIDA — Elida sophomore quarterback Clark Etzler threw three touchdown passes to Brandon Stinson and the Bulldogs took a 20-3 lead over St. Marys before lightning postponed the game until Saturday.

The game will resume with 1:21 left in the second quarter on Saturday. Elida had just scored on an Etzler to Stinson 13-yard touchdown pass and missed the extra point kick when lightning struck.

75 years ago: School started for pupils in St. Marys.

The Ethiopian Clowns defeated the St. Marys Eagles 8 to 3 at Memorial Field in front of a large crowd.

Senior Excels In Classes, Athletics

ST. MARYS — When Jaclyn Smith graduates from St. Marys Memorial High School in 2013, she is going to miss her classmates and all of the enjoyable activities she has participated in as a St. Marys student.

“The small group of classmates I grew up with and that made me the person I am,” Smith said of what she will miss after graduation. “I’m going to miss all of the fun high school activities that go on.”

School Wall Showcases Performing Arts Wing

NEW KNOXVILLE — Band, choir and theater students at New Knoxville Local School are being recognized with a wall displaying their accomplishments.

The performing arts wall, which is located near the conference rooms, has been painted red and gray and features pictures from past theater performances and awards for the band and choir.

Nancy Fiegel said the idea for the wall spurred from a talk she had with a parent.
