Project Celebrated

ST. MARYS — An anchor of St. Marys Square celebrated three months of construction with cake, balloons and an appearance by one of the most recognizable characters in the world.

Jeff and Mary Monfort hosted a dedication and ribbon-cutting ceremony Wednesday night to mark the completion of a renovation project at their McDonald’s restaurant at 1206 Indiana Ave. in St. Marys. Balloons hung from the  rafters and visitors to the eatery enjoyed cake and had the chance to meet Ronald McDonald.

Chamber Continues Work

NEW BREMEN — Southwestern Auglaize County Chamber of Commerce Director Scott Frey visited with New Bremen Village Councilors during their meeting Tuesday evening, updating them on the happenings at the chamber.

Frey brought the guestbook from the Lockkeeper’s House with him to showcase the amount of visitors to the visitor’s center and how far they’ve traveled.

Village To Revamp Roads

NEW KNOXVILLE — The village of New Knoxville will be working to improve its streets next year with help from grant funds from the county.

Kirby C. Cummins, 66

Kirby C. Cummins, 66, of Spencerville, formerly of the Lakeview area, died at 7:15 p.m. Monday, Sept. 10, 2012, at St. Rita’s Medical Center following a sudden illness.

He was born on Aug. 20, 1946, in Bellefontaine, the son of Norman V. and Eleanore J. Fay Cummins, and they preceded him in death.

On Oct. 2, 1970, he married Lynn D. Brown, and she survives.

Pair Indicted In Burglaries

WAPAKONETA — Two people have been charged in connection with a string of burglaries in eastern Auglaize County.

In a news release, Auglaize County Sheriff Al Solomon announced the arrests following an investigation by detectives from the Wapakoneta Police Department and sheriff’s deputies.

The case centered on a number of residential burglaries in the Wapakoneta, Uniopolis and Waynesfield areas.

GIRLS SOCCER: Riders, Bath play to 0-0 tie

ST. MARYS — The St. Marys girls soccer team’s pivotal week in Western Buckeye League play began with a bit of a non-starter.

The Roughriders and Bath played to a scoreless tie in a rematch of last season’s district final match and a key game in the WBL season.

MONDAY ROUND-UP: Bowman fires a 34, Burke has a 37 for St. Marys golf team

ST. MARYS — Carter Bowman asked his teammates if they wanted to play another nine after the St. Marys golf team’s match against Wapakoneta.

After tying a season-best 34, the St. Marys sophomore wanted to keep the round going.

Bowman shot a 34 and the Riders’ second-position player Colin Burke fired a one-over par 37 to lead the Roughriders.

ACDD Explores Security Upgrades

NEW BREMEN — Clients being transferred through the Auglaize County Department of Developmental Disabilities will soon be receiving cameras in their transportation vehicles.

Superintendent Al Willis noted Transportation Superintendent Barack Wells will be presenting further on the addition of cameras on the school buses at the board’s November meeting, but Willis said he met with Barack, along with representatives from the bus company Peterman, a few months ago to start talks.

Search Progresses For SSD

ST. MARYS — The next phase in St. Marys Mayor Pat McGowan’s search for a new safety-service director started this week.

The deadline for applications for the position was Friday. Now, McGowan is tasked with finding the city’s second safety-service director in less than a year, after Jason Little announced his resignation in August, which is effective Oct. 26.
