Shirley Mae Engel, 82

Shirley Mae Engel, 82, formerly of 503 E. Auglaize St., Wapakoneta, died on Monday, Oct. 29, 2012, at Auglaize Acres Nursing Home.

She was born on April 2, 1930, in Cincinnati, to Louis and Frieda (Kattelman) Meier, and they preceded her in death.

On June 27, 1953, in Barnesburg, she married A. Eugene Engel, and he preceded her in death on June 24, 2009.

ST. MARYS — For 86 years, Memorial High School stood at the center of St. Marys and was a gathering place for the community.

“The old school was the center of our community for generations — for 86 years to be exact,” Author Buz Howard read from his newest book, “The Life and Times of Memorial High School: A Pictorial History, 1924-2010” Tuesday night. “From 1924 to 2010, it stood majestically right in the center of our town.”

Trip To Be Rescheduled

ST. MARYS — A school trip to Washington, D.C. that was canceled because of Hurricane Sandy is back on.

St. Marys Superintendent Shawn Brown told The Evening Leader he received notification from K&K Tours that the eighth-grade trip will be rescheduled for a later date. The trip was canceled on Monday because of the impending storm — which caused massive devastation along the eastern seaboard.

Minster pre-sale football playoff ticket info

Pre-sale tickets for Minster's Friday home playoff football game against Tri County North will be sold on Thursday at the high school from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tickets will also be sold on Friday at the elementary school from 7:45 a.m. to 8:15 a.m. and at the high school from 8:15 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.  Presale tickets are $7.  All tickets at the gate are $9.  Minster will keep a portion of all pre-sale ticket sales.

Sandy Forces Cancellation

ST. MARYS — As Hurricane Sandy smashed into the East Coast on Monday, the massive storm also forced the cancellation of St. Marys Middle School’s eighth-grade trip to Washington, D.C.

St. Marys Superintendent Shawn Brown said initially plans were to delay the trip 24 hours, and then reassess the situation. However, as Sandy continued to pound the eastern seaboard, Brown said it became more clear the trip was in jeopardy.

NEW KNOXVILLE — Elementary students at New Knoxville Local School sprinted out to the track Monday afternoon to begin their one or two laps around the track.

The students are members of the Ranger Recess Walking Club, which “promotes fitness, character and responsibility while rewarding positive behavior,” according to a note sent home to parents.

Paul Joseph Rockwood, 55

Paul Joseph Rockwood, 55, of St. Marys, died at 10 p.m. Friday, Oct. 26, 2012, at Joint Township District Memorial Hospital in St. Marys.

He was born on Jan. 14, 1957, in Celina, to Paul F. and Dolores Mae (Johnson) Rockwood, and they preceded him in death.

He is survived by a son, Trent (Keri) Rockwood of Delphos; a daughter, Shannon Rockwood of St. Marys; three grandchildren,Paul Joseph Rockwood, 55, of St. Marys, died at 10 p.m. Friday, Oct. 26, 2012, at Joint Township District Memorial Hospital in St. Marys.

Cross Country: Minster girls and boys headed back to state

TROY — The Minster girls cross country team captured the Division III regional championship at Troy on Saturday afternoon and will be back at the state tournament in search of its 10th state title in school history.

The Wildcats scored 65 points to edge out second-place Russia, which had 69 points.

Minster’s seven runners all finished in the top 37.

Minster senior Hannah Butler led the way with an eighth-place finish and a 19:59 time.

Romney, Ryan Rally Crowd

CELINA — Greeted by a raucous crowd that packed the Celina Fieldhouse on Sunday, the Republican ticket of Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan energized their Republican base in this part of the state a mere nine days before the election.

“Celina, are you going to help us win this thing,” Ryan asked the crowd moments after being introduced by Lt. Gov. Mary Taylor. “As we think about what’s important to us ... Let’s remember this is the most important election in our lifetime, no matter what generation you come from. We have a lot at stake.”
