Teachers Tour Local Facilities

NEW BREMEN — Teachers in the New Bremen Local School District spent their teacher in-service touring manufacturing plants and learning of local opportunities to help educate students on possible career paths at a business engagement session Monday afternoon.

The event, which was sponsored by the New Bremen Business Advisory Council, allowed educators to learn about opportunities available to students in New Bremen.

City Gets Green Update

ST. MARYS — City Councilors learned about green energy options during Monday night’s meeting.

AMP representative Mike Weadock gave a presentation to St. Marys City Councilors regarding an upcoming solar energy project. Earlier this year, city officials submitted a proposal to be in contention for possibly hosting a solar field that would give the city access to green energy.

Gerald L. Seibert, 83

Gerald L. Seibert, 83, died on Sunday, Sept. 23, 2012, at St. Rita’s Medical Center in Lima.

He was born on May 23, 1929, in Spencerville, to Gilbert L. Seibert and Cleo (Counts) Seibert, and they preceded him in death.

On April 2, 1949, he married Jane E. Brockert, and she survives.

He is also survived by two daughters, Nancy (Ken) Williamson of Webster Groves, Mo., and Joyce (Larry) Bakle of Maumee; a brother; three sisters; a brother-in-law.

Ralph Eugene “Gene” Purdy, 82

Ralph Eugene “Gene” Purdy, 82, a lifelong resident of Spencerville, died at 9:15 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21, 2012, at St. Rita’s Medical Center, following a lengthy illness.

He was born on April 27, 1930, in Spencerville, to John Burdette and Thelma Grace DeLong Purdy, and they preceded him in death.

On Oct. 15, 1949, he married LaVonne “Bonnie” Strayer, and she preceded him in death on Aug. 2, 2007.

Eugene B. “Gene” Pleiman, 80

Eugene B. “Gene” Pleiman, 80, of Russia, died at 5:14 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21, 2012, at Wilson Memorial Hospital.

He was born on Aug. 8, 1932, in Russia, to August A. and Lavera (Voisard) Pleiman, and they preceded him in death.

On Nov. 28, 1953, at St. Denis Catholic Church in Versailles, he married Mary Louise Finfrock, and she preceded him in death on Sept. 21, 2001.

He is survived by his daughters, Becky Pleiman of Russia, Diann (David) McGarvey of Davidsonville, Md., and Lori Ward of Lebanon; two grandchildren; seven siblings.

Paula Burris, 63

September 25, 2012

Paula Burris, 63, of St. Marys, died on Saturday, Sept. 22, 2012, at Celina Manor Nursing Home.

 Rites will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday at Miller – Long & Folk Funeral Home in St. Marys.

Visitation will be held from noon until time of services on Saturday at the funeral home.

 A complete obituary will appear in tomorrow’s edition of this newspaper.

GIRLS SOCCER: St. Marys blanks Wapak, 4-0

WAPAKONETA — The St. Marys Roughriders rode a second-half backwind en route to a 4-0 victory of the Wapakoneta Redskins.

They were pretty good going into that wind, too.

Molly Albert had two goals on the game for St. Marys. Kelly Heitkamp and Skylar Liming each added one goal to bring the Roughrider total to four.

St. Marys had 12 shots on the target, and the Redskin combination of Sara Foor and Mikayla Halfhill had eight saves.

VOLLEYBALL: St. Marys, New Knoxville win in five sets

The St. Marys Roughrider volleyball team put together a strong fifth set and  defeated the Greenville Green Wave 20-25, 25-13, 26-24, 21-25 and 15-5 on Monday.

“We started a little slow in the first set,” Riders head coach Tricia Rosenbeck said. “In the second and third sets we started to play more aggressively. In the fourth set we played off and on, but we put everything together in the fifth set.”

GOLF: Minster wins MAC boys title

MINSTER — The home course advantage played nicely into the hands of the Minster boys golf team and three Auglaize County golfers at the Midwest Athletic Conference’s championship meet.

The Wildcats captured the MAC title after following up an 8-1 regular season with a seven-strokes clear of its main competition, Versailles.

Minster shot a 323 team score to clinch the title after it was tied with Versailles with matching 8-1 conference records heading into the tournament.

Event Helps Raise Funds

ST. MARYS — Runners and walkers joined to participate in a local church’s run/walk event Saturday morning.

As part of Living Hope Assembly of God’s First 5K, a group of runners and walkers traveled 3.1 miles to help raise money for the church, which is located at 1130 Indiana Ave.

Organizer Glen Madden noted Saturday’s event was the first of its kind for the church.
