Banks Strike Deal

CELINA — Mercer Savings Bank (MSB) and The Peoples Bank Co. (PBC) jointly announced today the two banks have entered into a purchase and assumption agreement to transfer accounts, real estate and other assets from MSB’s branches in St. Marys and Coldwater to PBC. Under the terms of the agreement, The Peoples Bank Co. will assume most of the deposits and purchase the real estate and certain assets of the St. Marys and Coldwater offices. Mercer Savings Bank will retain all loans from both offices.

Union, Veyance Reach Tentative Deal

ST. MARYS — According to a United Steelworkers news release, its union agreed to a tentative four-year deal with Veyance Technologies. The deal includes the St. Marys facility and would run through the end of July 2016.

Following a series of informational meetings, union members will vote to ratify the pact. The contract covers more than 1,000 Veyance employees in other facilities including Lincoln, Neb., Marysville and Sun Prairie, Wis.

Siblings Hit Ring In Beef Show

WAPAKONETA — A pair of St. Marys siblings could be found Wednesday afternoon preparing their calves for the upcoming show.

Lee Ann Bertke and her brother, Todd, were brushing their two calves, creating shiny coats and making sure they were in tip-top condition for the judges before the Junior Fair Beef Breeding and Feeder Calf Show.

“My favorite part is showing how much I accomplished and just going out there and having fun,” Lee Ann said.

Greg Phillips talks Roughrider football at Kiwanis meeting

With the high school football season a mere three-and-a-half weeks away, members of a local service club got a sneak peek into the 2012 version of the St. Marys Roughriders.

Greg Phillips briefed the St. Marys Kiwanis Club on all things Roughrider football during the club’s weekly meeting Tuesday night at the St. Marys Eagles. Phillips, who is entering his second season with the Roughriders, said he is optimistic about the team.

Harness Racing begins at Auglaize County Fair

WAPAKONETA — Victor Victory led from start to finish to capture the Moon City Trot on Tuesday night to highlight the first night of harness racing at the Auglaize County Fair.

Victor Victory captured the $2,000 purse in the six-horse field for four-year olds and older that is part of the Signature Series, a 17-race series.

Fire Burns Neil Ave. Home

ST. MARYS — A house fire on Neil Avenue Tuesday afternoon threw thick smoke into the air and caused close to $100,000 in damage.

Firefighters from the St. Marys Fire Department arrived on the scene of a house fire at 1501 Neil Ave. shortly before 2 p.m. Tuesday. When crews arrived, they quickly made entry into the residence.

Rabbits Hit Show Rings

WAPAKONETA — Though he’s not in school, Ryan Schwieterman has been studying over the summer to be as knowledgeable as he can about his 4-H project in preparation for the Auglaize County Fair.

“You have to know a lot of stuff,” the 11-year-old said Tuesday morning during the rabbit show at the fair.

In addition to his studies, Ryan, who was showing rabbits for the third time on Tuesday, has also kept busy taking care of his four rabbits.

“I’ve groomed them, cut their toenails,” he said.

Neil Ave. Home Catches Fire

ST. MARYS — Crews from two local fire departments battled a house fire on Neil Avenue in St. Marys Tuesday afternoon.

Firefigthters from the St. Marys Fire Department and St. Marys Township Fire Department worked to extinguish a house fire at 1501 Neil Ave shortly before 2 p.m. Tuesday. There was extensive damage to the rear of the home and smoke poured from its roof and filled the surrounding area.

At this time, there is no official word if anyone was injured.

Vendors' Market Set For Saturday

ST. MARYS — This weekend visitors to Grand Lake St. Marys State Park can help a local nonprofit group in its mission to providing new additions to the attraction that help keep tourists coming back.

The Grand Lake VIP Association will be hosting its first-ever vendors’ market on Saturday in the campgrounds. The event, which is scheduled to run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., will be staged along the main road of the campgrounds.
