April 5: The St. Marys Kiwanis Club's pancake breakfast will be held from 6 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. today at the American Legion on Ohio 703.

Noble Community Park's annual hog roast today. Meals will be served from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. and carryouts will be served until 6:30 p.m. There also will be games, clowns, a cake wheel, door prizes and 50/50. An auction starts at 7 p.m.

April 6: A free community dinner will be held from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. today at the ROC, 702 E. Spring St., St. Marys.

Team Walks For Gray Muzzles

ST. MARYS — A Michigan resident — and her furry friend Faith — recently passed through St. Marys as part of a journey that will take the pair thousands of miles along the North Country Trail.

Amy Kwiatkoski started her trek last month with the goal of the North Country Trail, which runs from upstate New York to North Dakota. This year’s harsh winter forced Kwiatkoski and her companion Faith — a 7-year-old Husky mix — to start halfway through the trail.

Jill A. Shepherd-Robinson, 52

Jill A. Shepherd-Robinson, 52, of 707 Gordon Grove in St. Marys, died on Friday, March 28, 2014, at her residence.

She was born on July 4, 1961, in Richmond, Ind., to Richard and Helen (Hollopeter) Brown.

She is survived by her husband, Terry Shepherd, of Galion; two sons, Jeremy (Natasha) Robinson  of Union City, Ind. and Joshua Robinson  of Greenville; a grandson, Joel Robinson; two brothers, Jerry (Amanda) Brown  of Oakwood and Joseph (Shana) Brown  of Crab Orchard, Ky.; and a sister-in-law, Naomi Brown  of Portsmouth.

Raptor Remains Recovered

ST. MARYS — What was to be a routine bridge replacement project has turned into a historic find for the city of St. Marys.

Excavation crews working on the High Street bridge project unearthed what have been determined as fossils belonging to a dinosaur. Fossil experts were called in shortly after the find Monday afternoon and determined the fossils are the remains of a velociraptor — one of the dinosaurs featured in the blockbuster movie “Jurassic Park.”

Allen L. “Red” Rider, 87

Allen L. “Red” Rider, 87, of 160 Watercrest Drive, St. Marys, died at 5:15 a.m. Saturday, March 29, 2014, at his residence.

He was born on Feb. 5, 1927, the son of Levi “Bum” and Jennie (Russel) Rider.

He married Margaret Lucille Ross on June 27, 1953, in Darke County, and she preceded him in death on Feb. 27, 2012.

Fleagle Honorable Mention All-American for Buckeyes

AUSTIN, Texas — Josh Fleagle, an Ohio State sophomore swimmer and St. Marys native, earned Honorable Mention All-American honors in a pair of relay events at the 2014 men’s NCAA Swimming Championships in the Lonestar state this past weekend.

Fleagle was a member of the 400 freestyle relay team that finished ninth in the nation with a new Ohio State varsity record time of 2:51.26.

Fleagle swam on the 16th-place 800 freestyle relay team with a 6:23.42 time, also good for Honorable Mention All-America.

NK Rangers Fundraise For Food

NEW KNOXVILLE — Rangers donated more than 2,000 canned goods and dry food items to Agape on Friday after a two-week competitive drive.

The drive, which was organized by the National Honor Society, will help fill the shelves at the food pantry. NHS Secretary Paige Lehman said the drive was on par with what the club raised the year before. Lehman noted the senior class netted the most donations.

“Seniors pitched in to win,” Lehman said. “The class voted to donate with extra money in their account.”

Rebecca “Becky” (Hale) Szanto, 66

Rebecca “Becky” (Hale) Szanto, 66, of Celina, made her journey to God on Wednesday, March 26, 2014, at home surrounded by family and friends.

Becky was born in Lima, on March 22, 1948, to the late Harry and Bertie Hale.  She graduated from Lima Central Catholic in 1966.  Becky married her best friend and the love her life, John A. Szanto II on Sept. 8, 1979.
