St. Marys shuts out Celina 6-0

CELINA — New day, same dominance.

The St. Marys baseball team finished off a 6-0 whitewashing of rival Celina on Wednesday behind the pitching of Nathan Wilker and an incessant offensive attack that collected 11 hits against a pair of Celina pitchers.

After thunderstorms postponed Tuesday night’s Western Buckeye League affair with two outs in the top of the fourth and the Riders leading 3-0, St. Marys picked up right where it left off.

Ruth Evelyn McKay, 92

Ruth Evelyn McKay, 92, died peacefully in her sleep on Monday, April 28, 2014, in Davidsonville, Md.  

She was the daughter of Howard D. and Ida Pearl McKay of New Bremen.

She is survived by one son, Mark Polansky Sr., one grandson, Mark Polansky Jr., and one great-grandson, Robert Jacob Polansky.  

She lived a life most people dream of. After graduating New Bremen High School in 1939, she entered Heidelberg College in Tiffen, graduating in 1943 with a bachelor degree in music.

The New Knoxville Adult Book Club will meet from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. today. The book being discussed is "Cane River" by Lalita Tademy.

Minster baseball shuts out New Bremen 5-0

MINSTER – The Minster Wildcats took advantage of four unearned runs and Brandon Hoying kept the New Bremen bats at bay in a 5-0 six-inning win called after six innings because of lightning on Tuesday.

Minster put pressure on the New Bremen defense with small ball.

“I thought we bunted well tonight,” Minster head coach Mike Wiss aid. “Bunting was something we have been working on and we played good defense. We have made goof strides the last couple weeks and I’m glad with that. ”

Bernadetta A. Schulze, 88

Bernadetta A. Schulze, 88, of New Bremen, died at 4:10 a.m. Tuesday, April 29, 2014, at the Joint Township District Memorial Hospital in St. Mary.  

She was born on July 17, 1925, in McCartyville. She was the daughter of August and Elizabeth (Tuente) Riethman.  

On June 18, 1947, in McCartyville, she married Linus Schulze, who preceded her in death on March 11, 2011.  

Hanley E. Evans, 73

April 30, 2014

Hanley E. Evans, 73, of 1025 Hendricks Ave. in St. Marys, died at 2:50 p.m. Monday April 28, 2014, at his residence.

He was born on April 18, 1941, in Fonde, Ky., to Doshie (Snodgrass) and Richard Evans Sr.

On May 8, 1971, in Sidney, he married Elaine L. Lynch, who survives.

Councilors Amend Grant Resolution

NEW BREMEN — The New Bremen Village Councilors amended a resolution regarding the village’s total amount owed for the Miami Erie Canal Towpath project Monday night during a special meeting.

The village owed a 20 percent match to the Ohio Department of Transportation to complete the project, but there was a cost increase.

Fire Damages Mercer County Home

CELINA — A Mercer County home sustained severe damage from a fire that broke out late Sunday night.

At approximately 11:02 p.m., Mercer County Central Dispatch received a call reporting a structure fire at 8673 U.S. 33, Center Township.

The initial call was placed by a neighbor, however dispatchers were soon flooded with calls reporting the fire.

No one was home at the time of the fire and the home sustained severe damage. The property is owned by Tracy Mabry Sr. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

James Lee “Jim” Settlemire, 90

April 28, 2014

James Lee “Jim” Settlemire, 90, formerly of Lima, passed away on Friday, April 25, 2014, at Otterbein – St. Marys.

He was born on Oct. 1, 1923, in Perry Township, Allen County, to Chester and Dolly (Marshall) Settlemire.

On Nov. 9, 1944, in Sloan,  Iowa, he married Patricia Clark, who survives at Otterbein – St. Marys.

St. Marys girls track team 3rd at Wapak Relays

WAPAKONETA — The St. Marys girls track team finished third and the Roughrider boys took sixth at the Wapakoneta Relays on Friday evening.

The Rider girls scored 56 points, trailing only Defiance (70) and second-place Wapakoneta (66).

Ottawa-Glandorf won the 10-team boys meet with 78 points. Anna was second (74), Defiance was third (62.5) followed by Wapak (47.5), Sidney (38) and St. Marys (35).
