May 17: Kelly Miller Circus is scheduled to perform at 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. today at Skip Baughman Stadium in St. Marys.

Spencerville Friends Church, 105 N. Mulberry St., will host an antique appraisal day at 1 p.m. today. No guns, coins, books, rugs, stamps or military items will be appraised.

May 18: A free community dinner will be held from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. today at the ROC, 702 E. Spring St., St. Marys.

St. Marys captures sectional title

ST. MARYS — The St. Marys baseball team hosted its first tournament home game and delivered its first sectional title in a decade on Thursday night at K.C. Geiger Park.

St. Marys’ offense once again overpowered a Western Buckeye League opponent and starting pitcher Nathan Wilker shook off a first inning blip to post six zeroes to end the game as a hearty crowd braved plummeting temperatures to watch St. Marys capture its first sectional baseball title since 2004 with a 9-1 win over the Elida Bulldogs on Thursday.

Weather pushes back tourney games, WBL track meet

Many of Wednesday’s area sporting events were moved to Thursday because of rain, including the first day of the Western Buckeye League track and field championships and tournament softball and baseball games.

The first day of the Division II sectional tennis tournament at UNOH scheduled for Thursday night was moved to Friday.
 

Minster wins sectional title with 7-4 win over Spencerville

MINSTER — The Minster Wildcats baseball team had to battle from behind Wednesday afternoon to emerge from the Division IV  sectional tournament. The Wildcats scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to rally past  the Spencerville Bearcats 7-4 in a  sectional title game held at Hanover Street Park.

Minster once again is headed back to the district tournament, but not before getting a scare from a young, talented Bearcat team.

Jean L. Smith, 91

May 15, 2014

Jean L. Smith, 91, of 11121 Circle Drive, St. Marys, died at 10 p.m. Monday, May 12, 2014, at Otterbein St. Marys Retirement Community.

She was born on Dec. 20, 1922, in St. Marys, the daughter of John and Lucy (Coil) Beale.

She married Darell S. Smith on Nov. 13, 1944, in San Francisco, and he preceded her in death on June 23, 2009.

Minster track collects seven MAC individual titles on first day

COLDWATER — The Minster boys and girls track teams earned a combined seven individual Midwest Athletic Conference titles on the first day of  the conference’s championship meet at Coldwater on Tuesday.

The Minster boys jetted out to 67.5 points on the first day. St. Henry is second with 30 points. Versailles is third with 28 points.  

Deputies Make Arrest

CELINA — Mercer County Sheriff Jeff Grey reports that his office stopped a male subject for OVI on Tuesday night. As part of a concentrated effort to battle the heroin problem in Mercer County, Grey assigned extra patrols in an effort to combat the problem.  This is the first arrest that the “Heroin Unit” has made.

Mary Ann Brotherwood, 86

May 14, 2014

Mary Ann Brotherwood, 86, of 922 Hendricks Ave. in St. Marys, died at 8:59 a.m. Monday, May 12, 2014, at Lima Memorial Health System.

She was born on April 18, 1928, in St. Marys, to Harry R. and Elizabeth Rachel (Miller) Boltz.

On April 4, 1953, in Portland, Ind., she married Donald L. Brotherwood, who survives.

New Bremen advances in sectional tournament

May 13, 2014

NEW BREMEN — The New Bremen softball team comfortably knocked off Fort Recovery in its own friendly confines in a Division IV sectional semifinal on Monday night to advance in the tournament.

The Cardinals got a 4-for-4 game from lead-off hitter Rachel Parker, five RBIs from Debbie Paul, a homer from Julie Brown and a complete game win in the pitcher’s circle from freshman Sophie Fox in the 10-2 tournament win.
