BASEBALL: Riders off to 4-2 start, Minster hands Wapak first loss

Another win over a Midwest Athletic Conference team has the St. Marys baseball team entering Western Buckeye League play in its best early-season position in five years.

The Roughriders collected a third win out of the last four games played against a MAC opponent with a patient offensive approach in a 7-3 win over New Bremen on Monday night at K.C. Geiger Park.

St. Marys at 4-2  has its best record through six games since 2007, when the Riders started the season 5-1.

Pitching and defense carried the day for the St. Marys softball team in its 6-1 win over Fort Recovery on Monday at K.C. Geiger Park.

St. Marys pitcher Lexi Roop dominated Fort Recovery, striking out 11 batters.

“She hit her spots,” St. Marys head coach  Sue Grothause said. “Her curveball is really working well. She knew she wasn’t on, but sometimes you aren’t on and you have to stay positive and push through it.”

Riders, Minster split doubleheader

The St. Marys baseball team’s bats woke up just in time to salvage a split against Minster and its dominating pitching staff.

Minster’s pitching shut out St. Marys for 12 straight innings, allowing the Wildcats to win the first game of doubleheader, 7-0, and appear to be steaming towards a win in the second game.

Dublin Jerome takes two over Riders

Dublin Jerome swept a Saturday doubleheader against the St. Marys softball team with 7-3 and 15-5 wins at K.C. Geiger Park.

In the 15-5 loss, St. Marys’ Harle Smith hit a two-run home run for the Roughriders.

Lexi Roop pitched and took the loss in both games for St. Marys. St. Marys fell to 1-4 on the season. The Riders host Fort Recovery tonight at 5 p.m.

Minster splits twin bill

Track: Minster wins Versailles boys invite

VERSAILLES — The Minster boys track team earned a win in the white division at the Versailles Boys Invitational on Saturday.

The Wildcats scored 195 points. Covington finished second with 115 points and New Bremen finished third with 78 points.

Minster senior Francis Slonkosky won the 1600 meter run with a 4:32.37 pace and the 800 meter run with a 2:02.16 time.

Minster’s Ryan Will won the shot put with a throw of 50 feet, 10.5 inches.

Minster’s Jake Winner won the discus throw with a toss of 146 feet.

OHSAA to put competitive balance plan back up for vote

COLUMBUS — The Ohio High School Athletic Association will again put a competitive balance proposal to a vote with Ohio high school principals in May.

In 2011, a measure attempting to level the playing field in high school sports between private and public schools was defeated, 332-303, by Ohio’s principals.

The OHSAA’s Board of Directors last Friday decided to put the referendum to a vote between May 1 and May 15.

The OHSAA called the proposal “slightly revised” from the 2011 version.

Fleagle heads to YMCA Nationals

Josh Fleagle, a homeschool student from rural St. Marys who has swam YMCA, club and now USA Swimming, will compete at the YMCA Nationals in Greensboro, North Carolina, next week, where he will be competing in seven events over just a few days.

Fleagle will defend his 100 meter freestyle national title  along with swimming in six other events packed into the week.

On April 2-5, Fleagle will swim in four individual events and three relay events with teammates  and local swimmers Jared Fleagle, Jared Deubler, Matt Feltz, Matt Hollman and Peyton Jones.

New Bremen's Frazee will play football at Rose-Hulman

NEW BREMEN —  New Bremen senior Neven Frazee announced he will play football at Rose-Hulman during a signing ceremony at New Bremen High School on Thursday night.

Frazee, a 6-foot-1 200-pounder who played offenive line, linebacker and punted, was named honorable mention Midwest Athletic Conference All-League this fall.

Frazee learned about the interest in him from the Terre Haute, Indiana school last summer.
