ST. MARYS — Sidney waited two seasons to celebrate a victory , so an extra minute of patience needed before kicking an overtime game-winner didn’t faze head coach Adam Doenges and his Yellow Jackets.
The St. Marys Roughriders were simply left kicking themselves for opportunities missed in the 2012 season opener.
Sidney senior kicker Andre Spillers booted a 30-yard field goal in overtime to snap Sidney’s 20-game losing streak and give the Yellow Jackets a 10-7 overtime win over St. Marys at Skip Baughman Stadium on Friday night.
COVINGTON — Running was the name of the game for the Covington Buccaneers Friday night in the opening game of the 2012 football season against the New Bremen Cardinals.
Junior A. J. Quellette did the running for the Buccaneers with 27 carries for 218 yards and three touchdowns as Covington defeated New Bremen, 27-7.
FORT LORAMIE — Minster's balanced offense churned out 401 yards of total offense and the defense pitched a shutout as the Wildcats beat Fort Loramie for the third time in the last two seasons, 28-0, on Friday night.
“We were playing a great football team, a back-yard-rival so it was a big ball game for us,” head coach Nate Moore said. “I am proud of the way the guys played. I felt like we came out here and everybody understood they had a role and everybody understand we had a job to do.”

ST. MARYS — Even 37 years after Archie Griffin last toted the football for the Ohio State Buckeyes, a room in this state goes wild when the only two-time Heisman Trophy winner enters it.
Griffin’s quick wit, genial smile, and zest for football were on full display in a town that loves the sport as much as he does — St. Marys — on Thursday night.
NEW KNOXVILLE – The St. Marys boys soccer team dominated play on offense in an 8-2 victory over the New Knoxville Rangers in the opening game for both teams Thursday.
