Fifty years ago this week, the St. Marys Roughriders tipped off boys basketball season with a 55-34 victory over Greenville.
As both teams seemed plagued by season-opening jitters and ice-cold shooting, Greenville led after the first quarter, 8-7 only to have St. Marys out-score them 14-2 in the second period to take a 21-10 lead into the locker room at intermission.
FORT LORAMIE — Both Fort Loramie head coach Carla Siegel and New Knoxville coach Tim Hegemier said their teams learned something from Tuesday night’s non-conference tilt.
It’s pretty clear that while both have rough edges as the season begins, once they’re a finished product they’ll be strong squads this season.
Fort Loramie built a double-digit lead and then held off a late New Knoxville charge in the fourth quarter to earn a 55-51 win on Tuesday night.
MINSTER — The Minster girls basketball team picked up their second win of the season as they hosted non-league opponent Mississinawa Valley Tuesday night.
The Wildcats quickly jumped to a big halftime lead and never looked back in a 58-31 win in their home opener.
Minster led 30-8 at the half.
BATH TOWNSHIP — Returning Midwest Athletic Conference player of the year Haley Horstman scored a game-high 20 points and the New Knoxville girls basketball team generated enough offense in the third and fourth quarters to squeeze past the Delphos St. John’s Blue Jays 37-34 on Friday in the opening game of the ninth annual Kewpee Tip-Off Classic held at Bath.
WAPAKONETA — Marion Local has tightrope walked its way to Massillon.
Jacy Goettemoeller took a pitch off right tackle, leapt over a McComb defender and burrowed his way in from seven yards out to lift a charmed Marion Local to a 34-28 win in triple overtime in a Division VI state semi-final at Wapakoneta’s Harmon Field on Friday night.
The Flyers (12-2) will play Newark Catholic on Friday, Nov. 30 at Massillon’s Paul Brown Tiger Stadium with a chance to win back-to-back state crowns and earn the school’s sixth state championship.
