KENTON — For 22 of the 24 minutes of Friday night’s first half, there were glimpses of St. Marys regaining its confidence on the Western Buckeye League stage against the league’s recent gold standard.
A defensive stop, an interception, and a perfect lob pass for a touchdown gave St. Marys a lead. And down just one point midway through the second quarter, St. Marys had a chance to take the lead going into the half with the ball inside the Wildcat five yard line.
SIDNEY — In a rematch of last year’s division VI regional final, Minster defeated Lehman Catholic 41-13 at Sidney Memorial Stadium on Friday night.
The Wildcats now head into next Saturday night’s showdown against defending conference champion Delphos St. John’s with a 2-0 record.
FT. LORAMIE — New Bremen’s gameplan found roadblocks when three of its running backs went down to injury on Friday night against a tough Fort Loramie defense.
For Fort Loramie it was open highway in a Route 66 battle.
With a pair of touchdowns in the first half and three touchdowns in the fourth quarter allowed the Ft. Loramie Redskins to beat the Cardinals 34-0.
“They are a good football team,” New Bremen head coach Rob Messick said. “They just outmatched us physically up front and we just have to get better.”
Here's what filled up Sports Editor Brian Smith's notebook during the week in preparation for Week 2 of the high school football season. Attached are rosters for this week's St. Marys-Kenton, Minster-Sidney Lehman and New Bremen-Fort Loramie games and a look at the St. Marys-Kenton football series through the years.

St. Marys Boys 4th at Celina Rotary invite
CELINA — Runners from St. Marys and New Knoxville competed at the Celina Rotary Cross Country invitational on Saturday at the Wright State Lake Campus.
The St. Marys boys cross country team finished fourth in the boys green division race with 110 points. Findlay won with 25 points, Bryan took second with 72 points, Celina was third with 86 points.
CELINA — Both driver Dan Kanfoush and the Celina Governor’s Cup Regatta returned in top form after a year hiatus.
Kanfoush of Niagra Falls, New York, won his second straight Ohio Governor’s Cup on Sunday, becoming the first driver to win the inboard boat racing event three times.
After a tumultuous year in news about Grand Lake St. Marys and its clean-up, the weekend was all about the boat racing.
SIDNEY — D.J. Manning ran around, over and past the Sidney Yellow Jackets and into the Roughrider record books.
Senior tailback D.J. Manning rushed for a St. Marys school-record 366 yards on 32 carries and found the end zone four times in St. Marys’ 41-21 romp over Sidney in the season opener on Friday night at Sidney Memorial Stadium.
Manning, who missed almost all of last season with an injury, returned with the greatest running performance at a school synonymous with great running backs and ground performances.
