Old refrigerators, pieces of scrap metal from area farms, schools and homes along with the more large-scale donations of some local industry all added up to a big boost for football players of all ages in St. Marys.
The Roughrider Touchdown Club raised more than $7,100 during a recent scrap metal drive. That comes out to more than 50,000 pounds of scrap metal from more than 80 families and companies around St. Marys. St. Marys varsity football players helped move the heavy scrap a large metal containter that was filled once and was filled up a second time.
Michael Schmitmeyer, a Memorial High Schol grad and former University of Findlay standout golfer, won his fourth East of Chicago Golf Championship on Sunday in dramatic fashion.
Holing out from 117 yards on the second sudden-death playoff hole, Schmitmeyer captured the title over Josh Veith in the championship match.
Going into the 17th hole Schmitmeyer held a 2-up lead, but Veith won both the 17th and 18th holes.
COLUMBUS — The Minster girls 4-by-400 meter relay team finished off the state track meet with an exciting race to the finish line.
The Minster 1600 meter relay team’s senior anchor Olivia Enneking stormed near the front of the pack on the final lap and got to within half a stride of first-place Archbold for the final 100 meters.
AKRON — Brittany Nero pulled an inside 1-0 pitch down the left field line and pinch runner Morgan Orlowski scampered across home plate in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Cuyahoga Heights a 2-1 walk-off win and its first-ever state title to end the Minster Wildcats’ dream of a Division IV state championship on Saturday.
“It was a great game, the way a state championship should be,” Cuyahoga Heights head coach Christy Zawadzki said.
ST. MARYS — The St. Marys boys 4-by-200 meter relay team went into last Saturday’s Division II regional track meet at Welcome Stadium with one goal in mind: break the school record time.
A trip to Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium this week was simply a byproduct. A rather rewarding byproduct.
The Rider quartet of senior Will Walter, junior Cam Swanson, sophomore Austin Tester and freshman Eric Spicer will run in the preliminaries on Friday at 2:40 p.m. The top eight teams will advance to Saturday’s final at 1:25 p.m.
