New Bremen advances in sectional tournament

NEW BREMEN — The New Bremen softball team comfortably knocked off Fort Recovery in its own friendly confines in a Division IV sectional semifinal on Monday night to advance in the tournament.

The Cardinals got a 4-for-4 game from lead-off hitter Rachel Parker, five RBIs from Debbie Paul, a homer from Julie Brown and a complete game win in the pitcher’s circle from freshman Sophie Fox in the 10-2 tournament win.

Gilberg's no-hitter leads New Bremen to sectional win

NEW BREMEN — New Bremen’s Jacob Gilberg got New Bremen’s postseason off to a great start with a no-hitter in a  10-0 win over the  Waynesfield-Goshen Tigers in the Division IV sectional tournament opener  at New Bremen on Saturday.

Gilberg allowed no runs on only two walks. He struck out seven and only threw 67 pitche  in his second straight stellar outing.

Nedderman knocks off third seed on first day of WBL tennis championship

LIMA — The St. Marys boys tennis team was involved in close matches at every spot of the line-up on the first day of the Western Buckeye League Championship at UNOH on Thursday, while third singles’ Justin Nedderman pulled off an upset to move into the semis.

Nedderman upended third-seeded Brandon Amstutz of Van Wert in a third singles opener 2-6, 7-5, 6-4. He will play in the semifinals on Saturday against Ottawa-Glandorf.

Minster wins in extra innings over Fort Recovery 1-0

MINSTER — A bases-loaded squeeze play gone awry turned out to be a winning play for the Minster baseball team.

Fort Recovery couldn’t execute a rundown between home plate and third base after Minster’s runners took off and a pitch went wide beyond what hitter Max Huber could bunt. The Indians threw the ball down the line — where the covering  shorstop was sprinting to get the bag — to allow Brandon Hoying to cross home plate for the 1-0 win in the bottom of the eighth inning at Hanover Street Park on Tuesday evening.

St. Marys, Minster baseball earn sectional byes and home games

The St. Marys baseball team earned the top seed in the area Division II district draw. The Roughriders, who are 15-4, will receive a first-round bye in the sectional before hosting the winner of the 10th-seeded Elida at fifth-seeded Lima Shawnee game on Thursday, May 15 at K.C. Geiger Park at 5 p.m. The winner advances to the district semifinal at Bluffton University on Thursday, May 22.

St. Marys baseball upends Defiance 7-3

The St. Marys baseball team dusted itself off  and delivered one of the program’s biggest regular-season victories in years.

The Roughriders kept its Western Buckeye League title hopes alive with a 7-3 win over defending state champ Defiance on Friday night at K.C. Geiger Park.

Less than 24 hours after the Riders let a three-run lead slip away in the top of the seventh to Shawnee in a deflating loss, St. Marys knocked off the area’s baseball factory, which has won the last eight league crowns.

St. Marys shuts out Celina 6-0

CELINA — New day, same dominance.

The St. Marys baseball team finished off a 6-0 whitewashing of rival Celina on Wednesday behind the pitching of Nathan Wilker and an incessant offensive attack that collected 11 hits against a pair of Celina pitchers.

After thunderstorms postponed Tuesday night’s Western Buckeye League affair with two outs in the top of the fourth and the Riders leading 3-0, St. Marys picked up right where it left off.

Minster baseball shuts out New Bremen 5-0

MINSTER – The Minster Wildcats took advantage of four unearned runs and Brandon Hoying kept the New Bremen bats at bay in a 5-0 six-inning win called after six innings because of lightning on Tuesday.

Minster put pressure on the New Bremen defense with small ball.

“I thought we bunted well tonight,” Minster head coach Mike Wiss aid. “Bunting was something we have been working on and we played good defense. We have made goof strides the last couple weeks and I’m glad with that. ”

St. Marys girls track team 3rd at Wapak Relays

WAPAKONETA — The St. Marys girls track team finished third and the Roughrider boys took sixth at the Wapakoneta Relays on Friday evening.

The Rider girls scored 56 points, trailing only Defiance (70) and second-place Wapakoneta (66).

Ottawa-Glandorf won the 10-team boys meet with 78 points. Anna was second (74), Defiance was third (62.5) followed by Wapak (47.5), Sidney (38) and St. Marys (35).

Minster baseball run-rules No. 8 Crestview for 7th straight

CONVOY — The Minster baseball team took its six-game winning streak north against a state-ranked Crestview team that ended the Wildcats’ two-year reign as Division IV champs last spring.

Minster (8-7) returned home with its streak intact.

The Wildcats roared past the eighth-ranked team in Division IV by a  10-0 score in a five-inning run-rule win.

Drew Ripploh threw the five-inning shutout for Minster, scattering five hits and striking out three.
