Thursday Girls Basketball Round-Up

December 12, 2014

NEW KNOXVILLE — It was a frustrating night for two of New Knoxville’s top scorers heading into the fourth quarter.

New Knoxville sophomore point guard Kenzie Schroer had only five points going into the fourth quarter of Thursday evening’s game against the Minster Wildcats. Meg Reineke missed some shots in the lane against Minster’s tough defense.

Minster Stuns Kirtland 46-42 for D6 State Championship

December 6, 2014

COLUMBUS — Everything had to go perfectly for Minster in the game’s final two minutes in order to pull off the greatest escape of a playoff run full of them.

Everything did.

Going from despair to elation in a matter four minutes and 18 seconds, Minster football earned its first state title in a quarter century in dramatic fashion against the state’s top-ranked team on Friday night at Ohio Stadium.

Game at Horseshoe adds excitement for MAC teams

December 4, 2014

For all the pressure that comes with playoff football, Minster head coach Geron Stokes said his team has embraced the atmosphere. Now they’ll get to soak it in one more week in the famed Horseshoe.

“We’re just flying around and having fun,” Stokes said.

While Minster’s opponent Kirtland is making its fourth straight appearance in the state championship game, the move in venue to Ohio Stadium adds to the excitement of Friday’s Division VI state championship game.

Minster faces the stacked-I of Kirtland

December 4, 2014

The Kirtland Hornets aren’t into tricks, gimmicks or complication. Two tight ends, a pair of fullbacks, a running back dotting the I-formation and the crunching of shoulder pads.

“Our motto is we’re going to do what we do,” Kirtland head coach Tiger LaVerde said on Monday. “We always say we’re going to learn these five plays and run them better than anybody in the state.”

Those five plays have been enough to make the Hornets into one of Ohio’s best programs.

Minster headed to D6 State Title Game

November 29, 2014

WAPAKONETA —It was only fitting that the game ended with a kick after the major role special teams played in Friday night’s state semifinal contest.

Minster watched, pleaded, prayed as Tinora kicker Josh Camp’s 27-yard field goal attempt in the final seconds of Friday night’s Division VI state semifinal football game drifted wide left. The miss assured the Wildcats of a 14-13 win over previously-unbeaten Tinora and locked in a berth in the state championship game next Friday at the Horseshoe.
