Versailles tops New Bremen in early MAC showdown

NEW BREMEN — A three minute stretch midway through the third quarter allowed the Versailles Tigers to close up a deficit and by the end of the quarter grab a three-point lead. The Tigers hit free throws down the stretch to defeat New Bremen 58-47 Friday night.

New Bremen moves to 1-2 and 0-1 in the MAC.

St. Henry pulls away from Riders 56-42

ST. MARYS  — St. Henry’s first half was a messy affair, full of fouls on defense to go with a clunky offense. The first several possessions of the second half erased all that for the Redskins.

St. Henry scored the first 11 points of the third quarter to break things open after St. Marys had closed to within one at the half and the Redskins earned a 56-42 non-conference win at Memorial High School.

St. Henry outscored the Riders 17-6 in the third quarter to take a 42-30 lead into the fourth.

St. Marys splits at super tri in Wapak

WAPAKONETA — Celina rallied in the late stages of its match against the St. Marys wrestling team at Thursday night’s super-tri at Wapakoneta, earning a pair of key pins and a void in three of the last four classes to eek out a 36-34 win over the rival Roughriders.

Minster's Ethan Wolf Second Team All-Ohio in D6

Minster’s big-play receivers earned All-Ohio recognition when the Division VI honors were announced by the Associated Press on Wednesday night.

Minster tight end Ethan Wolf was named Second Team All-Ohio. Wolf, who caught 41 passes for 475 yards and five touchdowns, is a 6-foot-5, 240-pound senior who signed with the University of Tennessee.

Eli Wolf, a 6-foot-4, 190 pound junior wide receiver, earned Special Mention honors. Wolf caught  48 passes for 907 yards and nine touchdowns — all team best numbers.

St. Marys' Knous Special Mention All-Ohio in D3

St. Marys senior safety Jared Knous earned Special Mention Associated Press All-Ohio honors in Divison III on Tuesday.

Knous, who led the Western Buckeye League with eight interceptions and was named First Team All-WBL and all-district, also led St. Marys with 71 tackles. He broke up 10 passes attempts, caused two fumbles, recovered two fumbles and blocked two kicks.

St. Marys wrestling goes 5-0 at Sielski Memorial Invitational

COLDWATER — The St. Marys wrestling team got off to a strong start to the season by winning the Sielski Memorial Invitational at Coldwater on Saturday.

The Roughriders earned wins over Spencerville, Lincolnview and Edgerton and Coldwater to go 5-0.

The Roughriders had four wrestlers who finished the day 5-0.

Garrett Hower finished 5-0 at 113 pounds. Justin Nedderman went unbeaten at 120 pounds. The Riders’ Jayden Heitkamp was 5-0 at 160 pounds. Ryan Slife went unblemished at 182 pounds.

Saturday Boys Hoops Round-Up

SPENCERVILLE — The Spencerville boys basketball team rolled to a 25-point lead but had to withstand a rally by Minster to defeat the Wildcats 78-67 on Saturday night.

Five players from Spencerville scored in double figures led by Zach Goecke with 19 points and nine rebounds. Mason Nourse scored 11 points and Ben Bowers, Dakota Prichard and Bailey Croft each scored 13 points.

FORT LORAMIE 63, NEW KNOXVILLE 61

FORT LORAMIE — Behind 20 points from junior Devin Braun Fort Loramie rallied from a deficit to start the fourth quarter for a 63-61 win over the Rangers Friday in a season opener.

The Redskins started strong by scoring the game’s first seven points and holding a double-digit lead after one quarter.  

“Our kids were not mentally ready to play tonight,” Rangers head coach Kort Fledderjohann said. “Fort Loramie capitalized and took advantage of that.”
