St. Marys' Heitkamp takes 7th in D2 girls pole vault

COLUMBUS — St. Marys Memorial senior Kelly Heitkamp made this year’s journey to state in the pole vault a business trip.  Heitkamp closed the deal with a finish five places better and a foot higher than last year’s trip.

Heitkamp cleared 10 feet, six inches and wrapped up her record-setting senior season with a seventh-place finish in the Division II girls pole vault on Saturday morning at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in Columbus.

Minster boys finish 4th at D3 state track meet

COLUMBUS — Minster junior relay runner Paul Dues stood just outside the wrought-iron gate at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium when a fan wearing a shirt from another part of the Ohio slapped the junior on the back, congratulated him and  told Dues he had run the 1600 meter relay race for Minster years ago.

Celina's Wenning wins DII high jump championship

COLUMBUS — Sometimes skill — and not practice — makes perfect.

The high jump was almost an afterthought event for Celina’s Michaela Wenning for much of the season. A standout hurdler, Wenning only practiced the event three times outdoors this spring.

“One of the times was this week,” Wenning said.

The Celina junior just happens to be the best girls high jumper in Division II.

Minster has big first day at state track

COLUMBUS -- Minster junior Dominic Slonkosky wanted to make sure he at least brought the Wildcats’ 3200 meter relay team a fourth-place finish.

“I didn’t want to slow down or hit a wall,” Slonkosky said.

Slonkosky did a whole lot more than that with a blistering final lap that pushed the Wildcat quartet into third place with a new school record time.

Minster boys win regional title, New Knoxville's Mackie to state in 2 events

PIQUA — New Knoxville senior Andrew Mackie has a big week of practice ahead of him before heading to state in both the high jump and 400 meter dash.

“It’s two completely different parts of the body,” Mackie said after finishing his third event at the regional meet at Piqua on Saturday. “So you just have to work hard and have good stamina.”

St. Marys' Heitkamp wins regional pole vault title, headed to state

St. Marys senior Kelly Heitkamp cleared 10 feet, eight inches and won the Division II regional championship in the girls pole vault on Saturday at Lexington.

Heitkamp, who is the school-record holder in the event, will return to the state tournament for the second straight year. In 2012, Heitkamp finished 12th a season ago with a vault of 10 feet.

St. Marys junior Kristen Dammeyer finished sixth in the girls 3200 meter run with a 12:08.72 time.

St. Marys junior Amanda Dues finished ninth in the girls 1600 meter run with a 5:36.37 time.

St. Marys girls 3200 meter relay team finishes season on podium

LEXINGTON — The St. Marys 3200 meter relay quartet of junior Kristen Dammeyer, junior Lexi Grothause, senior Marissa Schrolucke and junior Amanda Dues finished its season on the podium. The Roughrider distance relay team finished eighth at the Division II regional meet on Thursday.

With three of the four returning to the regional from last years 3200 relay team, the Roughriders improved eight spots from last year’s 16th place finish.

Schrolucke, the lone senior in the quartet, said it was a great way to cap her senior year.

Minster sweeps 3200 meter relays at DIII regional

The Minster boys and girls 3200 meter relay teams both won regional titles to highlight the first day of competition at the Division III regional track meet at Piqua on Wednesday.

Both will advance to the state championships next week at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in Columbus.

Marion Local leads the girls standings after the first day with 14 points. Minster is third.

The Minster boys are atop the boys standings with 27.5 points after the first day.
