50 Years Ago This Week – 1963
This week in 1963, the St. Marys Roughriders headed north to Montpelier for a day of football scrimmages in both the morning and afternoon.
The Roughriders tallied four touchdowns in the morning session and pulled away with the 24-12 victory in the pre-season meeting. Tommy Hollman scored twice in the win with a 50-yard run and a ten-yard pass from quarterback Ralph Hecht.
SHAWNEE TOWNSHIP — The St. Marys and Shawnee girls soccer teams opened the Western Buckeye League in the wildest of fashion , a back-and-forth battle that ended in a 3-3 tie.
St. Marys had a one-goal lead twice in the match when Kristen Dammeyer and Anabela Godinho scored first half goals, only to watch Shawnee quickly tie the game. The Roughriders then turned the tables by erasing a second-half deficit with a Kami Menchoffer goal that tied the game at 3-3.

Sidney head football coach Adam Doenges built a four-win team a season ago from the wreckage of back-to-back 0-10 seasons. Now he says it’ll take a slightly different tack to make the Yellow Jackets into a winner.
That means a little less coddling and more responsibility from a Sidney team that will play host to the St. Marys Roughriders on Friday night at 7 p.m. in a regular-season opener for both squads.
A pair of Roughrider golfers went low in a Western Buckeye League win. St. Marys’ Carter Bowman shot a 35 and Colin Burke had a 36 to lead the Roughriders to a 162-170 win over Elida on Monday night.
Trent Cutlip led Elida with a 39. Nate Cellar added a 40 for the Bulldogs. St. Marys hosts Van Wert on Thursday at 5 p.m.

CELINA — The Governor’s Cup Regatta returned and so did Dan Kanfoush’s grip on the race’s championship.
Kanfoush and owner Jim Sechler won their third straight and fourth-ever Governor’s Cup on Sunday.
“It’s one of the events we start talking about in May and how we’re going to try to win this thing,” Kanfoush said.
