The St. Marys Roughriders volleyball team finished second at their namesake invitational while earning their first two victories of the season before falling to Pandora-Gilboa 25-19, 22-25 and 25-23 in the championship match on Saturday.
“I’m proud of the girls,” Riders head coach Monica VanderHorst said. “In the first set we got off to a slow start, but we played them tough. In the second set we played with enthusiasm and when you have the serve-receive at 90 percent that’s pretty effective.”
WAPAKONETA — The St. Marys girls cross country team earned the Wapakoneta Night Meet title on Saturday evening. The Roughriders won their first invitational of the season under the lights with seven runners finishing in the top 20 of the girls finishers.
SIDNEY — Those pesky final few yards of the red zone proved to be the St. Marys football team’s undoing in a 19-16 season-opening loss at Sidney.
St. Marys’ offense had first and goal situations three times on Friday night and emerged with only three points in those trips. The Roughriders’ most excruciating failure to convert came in the game’s closing minutes, as St. Marys had the potential game-winning touchdown pass slip through its hands on fourth and goal from the three yard line.
ALLEN EAST 28, NEW BREMEN 13
NEW BREMEN — Behind three touchdowns from Ross Stewart the Allen East Mustangs pulled away in the fourth quarter for a 28-13 victory over the New Bremen Cardinals in the opening game of the season Friday night at New Bremen.
“Ross is our workhorse,” Mustangs head coach Mike Abbey said. “There is no doubt about it. He was able to get loose a few times and we needed his running.”
Stewart had 175 yards rushing to go with the three touchdowns.

A Sidney program that made the leap from winless to four victories last fall opens the season against a St. Marys football team looking to make a similar advance forward in 2013.
For St. Marys head coach Greg Phillips, the key to the Riders’ success is finding some consistency, especially on the offensive side of the ball.

The St. Marys boys soccer team cleared last year’s stumbling block and this season’s big opening Western Buckeye League hurdle.
The Roughriders knocked off defending WBL champ Shawnee 2-1 on Thursday evening a season after the Indians handed St. Marys their only two losses of the season.
