ST. MARYS — Carter Bowman had another putt to tie the St. Marys golf program’s nine-hole record and the Roughrider boys golf team had little trouble disposing of the Defiance Bulldogs 163-178 in Western Buckeye League golf action at Northmoor on Monday evening.
Bowman fired a medalist three-under par on the par 36 course. Twice this season the Roughrider junior has shot 33s with a putt on his ninth hole to tie the school record 32 shared by Mark Bergman and Drew Paulus on the par 35 front nine at Northmoor.

ST. MARYS — The St. Marys football team is a couple of plays away from a 2-0 start to the season. Instead, they’re a painful, gut-wrenching 0-2.
The Roughriders struggled to move the chains for much of the game and after finally finding some instant offense with a 60-yard touchdown run came up an extra-point shy against the Shawnee Indians in a 14-13 loss at Skip Baughman Stadium on Friday night.
St. Marys has lost its first two games of the season by a combined four points after suffering a 19-16 loss to Sidney a week ago.

The St. Marys football team opens the home and Western Buckeye League portion of its 2013 schedule against a Shawnee team that was tested by a defending state champion in Week 1.
New Shawnee head coach Steve Owen made his debut in a 42-7 loss to Marion Local as pilot of the Indians program after being the team’s offensive line coach under Dick West, who retired after the 2012 season.
Owens said much of the principles his team uses on both the offensive and defnesive sides of the ball are the same as Shawnee under West, but tweaked to make use of space.
ST. MARYS — The St. Marys girls tennis team had its hands full with an experienced Celina team on Thursday, but St. Marys head coach Brice Brenneman said his team was able to measure its progress.
“I really was pleased with the way we played,” Brenneman said after Celina won 5-0. “It would’ve been nice to pull a set out somewhere, but we had matched up with them at every position at least once when playing in invitationals and every position was quite a bit better than it was before.”
