COLDWATER – The odds were against the New Bremen Cardinals basketball team Friday night in the Division IV sectional championship at the Palace in Coldwater. They were without their head coach Adam Dougherty, who was sitting out the second game of his suspension from being ejected from the Delphos St. John’s game two weeks ago, and they had a 13-day layoff since their last game.
The Cardinals didn’t let the obstacles get in their way as they used a big third quarter run to defeat the Marion Local Flyers 53-45 for the sectional title.
ST. MARYS — The Midwest Athletic Conference swept Thursday’s Division IV district semifinal games at Memorial High School to set up yet another title tilt between backyard rivals.
Minster put on another stifling defensive performance in the nightcap in a 42-30 win over Ada, while Marion Local built a double-digit lead and then staved off Kaylee Patton and the Waynesfield-Goshen Tigers in the fourth quarter for a 61-51 win in the night’s opening contest.
St. Marys senior guard Garet Fledderjohann has been named First Team All-Western Buckeye League.
Fledderjohann, during the regular season averaged19.8 points per game, shot 40 percent from 3-point range and dished out 4.9 assists per game while becoming the third greatest scorer in Memorial High School history and passing the 1,000-point barrier. Fledderjohann currently has 1,088 points for his career — 102 points behind No. 2 on the list, Damon Goodwin, a University of Dayton standout, NBA draft pick and current Capital University head coach.
