ASHLAND — The St. Marys boys’ soccer team’s record-setting tournament run ended in the Division II regional championship held Saturday afternoon in Ashland. With two goals in the first half and a goal in the second half the Bay Village Bay Rockets defeated the Riders 3-0.
“I couldn’t be more proud of these guys,” St. Marys head coach Dave Ring said. “If we would have scored those two goals in the beginning especially Lemmermans’ shot off the crossbar would have set the tone.”
HEBRON — New Knoxville senior Cassie Boyle returned to the state cross country meet after a year hiatus and made the most of it.
Boyle finished 25th in the girls Division III race in her final race for the Rangers on Saturday on the course at Hebron’s National Trail Raceway that winds around the dragstrip and finishes in front of the large grandstand about a quarter mile down the track.
“I was happy I made All-Ohio,” Boyle said. “I was hoping for a little bit more, but I’ll take it.”
10 Years Ago This Week – 2003
This week in 2003, the St. Marys Roughriders squared off with the Cincinnati Wyoming Cowboys in football playoff action and unfortunately for Roughrider fans, were sent home with a 18-16 defeat.
Wyoming got the scoring underway early in the first period to jump ahead 6-0, but Bo Frye answered with touchdown runs of 3 and 33 yards in the second quarter to push the Blue and Gold in charge, 14-6.
