FINDLAY — The St. Marys boys soccer team is riding its defense along a path of 1-0 wins to the doorstep of the state tournament.
Jared Rose knocked in the game-winning goal in scrum in front of the goal in the closing minutes of the second overtime, avoiding the ordeal of penalty kicks and extending the Roughriders’ season into November for the first time in the program’s history with a 1-0 win over the Maumee Panthers at Graham Memorial Stadium in Findlay on Wednesday.
TIFFIN — In her first season of running cross country, St. Marys’ Kristen Dammeyer is headed to state.
The Roughrider senior finished 13th overall in the girls Division II regional meet at Tiffin on Saturday to advance to next Saturday’s state championship meet at National Trail Raceway in Hebron, just outside of Columbus. The Division II girls run at 11:45 a.m.
Dammeyer ran a 19:37.72 on a frosty Saturday that had runners battling the course, opponents and some cold winds sweeping across Hedges Boyer Park.
ELIDA — The St. Marys boys soccer team has been talking about its objective for weeks now — get to state.
With another 1-0 win — this time in the lair of their opponent — the Roughriders got a step closer in a Division II district championship game win over Elida on Saturday night with an early goal and more of its trademark stingy defense.
The district championship is the first in the 18-year history of the Roughrider boys soccer program.
OTTAWA — Ottawa-Glandorf lined up senior Tyler Zender all over the field — at running back, at fullback, in the wing, at wideout and in the slot — and found all kinds of ways to let the 6-foot-3, 180-pounder make big plays in a 47-0 win over the St. Marys football team on Friday night at chilly Titan Stadium.

VAN WERT — The New Knoxville volleyball team made the defending state champions work for their latest district championship.
The Rangers gave the top-ranked Marion Local Flyers all they could handle for three games before the Flyers emerged with a 25-21, 22-25, 25-17, 25-9 win in the Division IV district championship game at Van Wert.
ELIDA — After 80 fruitless minutes, the St. Marys boys soccer team wasted little time in overtime to keep its postseason run going.
Zac Nelson booted the Roughriders into the district title game with a golden goal a little more than a minute into extra time on Wednesday night, and the Roughriders defeated the Bryan Golden Bears 1-0 in a Division II district semifinal.
WAPAKONETA — Wapakoneta head coach Doug Frye put the ball and his trust in the hands of a first-time starting sophomore quarterback in the St. Marys game.
Aaron Huffman looked quite comfortable running the Redskin Wing-T attack in his varsity debut with a player like Keaton Metz catching his passes and a hulking fullback like Zach Schmerge bowling over Roughrider defenders.
Wapakoneta romped 49-14 over the Roughriders at Harmon Field on Friday night to continue its success against their Augalize County rival since Frye arrived.
