LIMA — Gancalo Branco kicked in the overtime golden goal, lifted a finger to his mouth almost as if to silence any fears that the score New Knoxville gave up in the closing minutes of regulation would be too big an emotional hurdle to overcome and then was mobbed near midfield on the turf at Lima Stadium.
The New Knoxville boys soccer team bounced back from losing a late lead in regulation to clinch a 2-1 sudden-victory in overtime over Fort Jennings in a Division III sectional final on Saturday.

VAN WERT — The St. Marys football team knew Van Wert would stick to the ground game after rain made for another sloppy track.
Even with the Riders keyed to stop him Van Wert's Caleb Lloyd ran at will anyways, helping to hand St. Marys a 26-6 loss at Eggerss Stadium in a battle of teams that came into Friday night without a win.
VERSAILLES — Minster quarterback Adam Niemeyer connected with Ethan Wolf on a five-yard touchdown with 31 seconds left in the game to give Minster a thrilling 20-14 win over Versailles on Friday night.
Minster got the ball with 1:39 left in the game and Niemeyer led the Wildcats down the field for the game-winning drive that boosts Minster’s chances of a home playoff game in Week 11.
Driving and tied 14-14, Minster didn’t settle for a game-winning field goal attempt.
DELPHOS — The New Bremen Cardinals had the Delphos St. John’s Blue Jays right where they wanted them at halftime, leading 3-0.
But the Blue Jays came back with 34 unanswered points in the second half to beat the Cardinals 34-3 Friday night at Stadium Park in Delphos.

CELINA — When a team scores a goal in the first 30 seconds, it’s a pretty good sign.

The Riders (13-3-1) will now play Celina next Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Celina in a district semifinal match.

One team’s long wait for a first victory will end on Friday when the St. Marys football team treks north to venerable Egress Stadium in Van Wert to face the Cougars.
St. Marys head coach Greg Phillips hopes it’s his team, but the Roughriders’ second-year coach said his team can’t afford to take anyone lightly as his team looks to avoid the school’s first winless season.
50 Years Ago This Week – 1962: This week in 1962, Memorial High School celebrated Homecoming weekend in fashion with a 27-8 victory on the football field over the Van Wert Cougars.
The Roughriders scored their initial touchdown late in the opening period after receiving a punt near midfield. On the third play of the series, Terry Young ripped through an opening in the offensive line and raced for the 50-yard touchdown. Tom Hollman’s PAT run was a success, and the Roughriders were in charge 8-0.
