August 16th
MINSTER — The New Bremen boys golf team picked up a Midwest Athletic Conference win over Delphos St. John's on Thursday morning at Arrowhead Golf Club.
Delphos St. John's Nick Kayser fired a two-under par 34 for medalist honors.
New Bremen's Darin Bergman led the way for New Bremen with a 38.
Alex Britton had a 40, Tyler Hagen shot a 44 and Travis Bertelsen had a 46 for the Cardinals.
New Bremen will host Russia on Friday at 10:30 a.m. at Arrowhead, with both the varsity and JV competing.
MINSTER — Carter Bowman wasn’t thrilled with a tie, even if it was for the best score on the course on Wednesday.
Bowman finished tied for medalist at the Auglaize County Invitational at Arrowhead Golf Club, but the St. Marys sophomore standout golfer was still kicking himself about how he finished down the stretch.
“It’s medalist, but it could’ve been a whole lot better,” Bowman said.

MINSTER — The Minster boys golf team distanced itself from the rest of the 14-team field to capture the Cardinal Invitational in the comfort of its home course Arrowhead Golf Club on Tuesday.
Minster sophomore Xavier Francis fired a two-over par 74, Freddie Purdy and John Burke each had 78s, and Josh Tumbusch shot an 82 for the Minster team total of 312.
Minster was 10 shots clear of second-place Russia, which shot a 322 on a day of early rain followed by clear, cool conditions.

50 Years Ago This Week – 1962
The St. Marys Lakers pushed themselves above the .500 mark for the first time since their season-opener when they were 1-0 with an 11-5 victory over Bradfield Center.
St. Marys dug themselves in a one-run hole to start the game, but quickly responded with two runs in the bottom of the first inning and five more over the next three innings.

St. Marys Memorial head football coach Greg Phillips talks to players before the inaugural flag football season in St. Marys at the turf field near Memorial High School. The flag football league begins its first season with 95 players who are ages 6-10.
Individuals who ordered St. Marys football season tickets may pick up their tickets until Thursday, Aug. 9 from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the high school office. Season tickets not claimed will be sold to the public on Thursday, Aug. 9 starting at 7 p.m. Those wishing to purchase new seats or trade seats may do so. The athletic department also has 60 parking passes available for sale at $20 per pass.

WAPAKONETA — Treg Drexler watched his dad Tony compete in demolition derbies for years, so he relished the chance when the second session of Thursday night's Auglaize County Fair derby came down to just the two family members.
"He's been at it for over 27 years," Treg said. "I knew he was going to be tough to beat. I knew I had to get on him from the get-go and drive like he'd drive."
Treg, driving a black 1993 Lincoln Continental, bested his father, Tony, who drove a green 1970s Ford station wagon.

This week in 1962, the St. Marys Lakers hosted the Botkins baseball club in non-Western Ohio League action at Memorial Field.

With the high school football season a mere three-and-a-half weeks away, members of a local service club got a sneak peek into the 2012 version of the St. Marys Roughriders.
Greg Phillips briefed the St. Marys Kiwanis Club on all things Roughrider football during the club’s weekly meeting Tuesday night at the St. Marys Eagles. Phillips, who is entering his second season with the Roughriders, said he is optimistic about the team.
WAPAKONETA — Victor Victory led from start to finish to capture the Moon City Trot on Tuesday night to highlight the first night of harness racing at the Auglaize County Fair.
Victor Victory captured the $2,000 purse in the six-horse field for four-year olds and older that is part of the Signature Series, a 17-race series.
