July 30th
After a period of stability and playoff success brought by nationally-recruited, record-setting quarterbacks and gaudy numbers put up by a handful of running backs, the Western Buckeye League will have a lot of new faces in key spots in what should be a wide-open race.
The Midwest Athletic Conference had another banner year with five playoff teams, two teams in state championship games and Marion Local adding a fifth state title. The league has a quartet of teams that look like state title contenders again this season.
CELINA — Trevor Kill and the Grand Lake Mariners both finished the season on quite an upswing.
The Grand Lake Mariners ended their 2012 campaign on an upswing, taking two from the Southern Ohio Copperheads, 4-3 in 11 innnings and 9-8, on Sunday at Jim Hoess Field in Celina.
Grand Lake finished the season winning seven of its eight final games for a 15-23 record. The outscored opponents 61-35 in final eight games, after being outscored 212-145 in the first 30 games of the season.
July 27th
About 200 cyclists are expected to compete in Sunday’s Colavita Zipp Time Trials event in St. Marys.
The nearly 12-mile event, which is one of nine races on a tour that has events in northwest and southwest Ohio along with eastern Indiana, returns to the Auglaize County Council on Aging for the third straight year. Registration starts on Sunday at 7:30 a.m. and the time trials begin at 9 a.m.
50 Years Ago This Week – 1962
Fifty years ago this week, the St. Marys Lakers jumped on top of the St. Marys Legion baseball team early before eventually holding them off for what became a 12-10 victory at Memorial Field in St. Marys.
Earlier in the season, the Lakers let a late-game lead against the Legion slip from their hands, but this time around they held on for the win.
The Lakers popped the cork in the third inning with four runs and added six more through the fifth inning.

Forty years and more than $600,000 donated to St. Marys Memorial athletic programs later, the group kicked off its fall 2012 events, which include teaming up with St. Marys Tailgate for Cancer to bring two-time Heisman Trophy winner Archie Griffin to the city.
Griffin will appear at Buffalo Wild Wings in St. Marys on Thursday, Aug. 23, in a fundraiser for the Rider Rooters.

ST. MARYS — Floyd Keith years ago found a good rule to live by posted near — of all things — a livestock scale.
“Do right and fear no man”, a take on a 15th century English proverb is one of the abiding maxims of his life the standout athlete, coach and executive said on Saturday in a speech to a local booster group.
It's taken him a long way.

COLUMBUS (AP) — The Ohio Basketball Hall of Fame will induct 11 players and coaches who starred in the state including St. Henry native Ron Niekamp and his University of Findlay 2009 Division II champs, former St. Henry High School coach Fran Guilbault and Wapakoneta’s Steve Trout, who was picked by his fellow officials.
Among the inductees are Miami’s Randy Ayers and Wally Szczerbiak, the Cleveland Cavaliers’ Brad Daugherty, the University of Cincinnati’s Kenyon Martin and UConn’s Tamika Williams Raymond.
