CELINA — A national organization is actively seeking volunteers to help track weather in Auglaize and Mercer counties.
The Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow Network (CoCoRaHS) is a “community-based network that incorporates training and education on tracking rain and snowfall,” according to the organization’s website. Presenters Ashley Novak and Julie Reed of the National Weather Service spoke with area residents Wednesday night at Wright State University Lake Campus about how to get involved and some techniques to collecting weather data.
January 26th
CELINA — A newly formed Flotilla hosted an open house Wednesday night to inform area residents about how they could get involved and to discuss the group’s mission.
The Coast Guard Auxiliary District 8 Eastern Region, Division 6, Flotilla 12 held its chartering ceremony last week and is now working to inform the community about opportunities the Coast Guard Auxiliary offers. Flotilla Commander Larry Baker said Coast Guard Auxiliary members are all volunteers.
ST. MARYS — Local students received a lesson in safety as part of an official’s visit to their school on Wednesday.
“Magic Tom” Rozoff and St. Marys Ptl. Kevin Draiss presented the Officer Phil and PALS program at St. Marys Intermediate School on Wednesday.
“The Officer Phil program is sponsored by the St. Marys Police Department and is paid for by local businesses,” Rozoff told The Evening Leader. “Each student will get a safety booklet, and it mentions the local businesses.”

ST. MARYS — Auglaize County ended 2011 with an unemployment rate almost 2 percent less than where it ended 2010.
In data released Tuesday by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, Auglaize County recorded a December unemployment rate of 6.3 percent, down from 6.4 percent in November. In 2010, the unemployment rate for December sat at 8.2 percent.
ST. MARYS — A long friendship has spurred the partnership of two area residents who are trying to make a difference in the lives of cancer patients.
Debi Squire and Kim Strickland met in high school, when Strickland moved from South Korea to the United States. Squire took time to teach Strickland English and took her out to social events.
“I didn’t speak English when I first came,” Strickland said. “Debi just put me under her wing and said ‘OK.’ She taught me to speak and corrected my English all the time.”
CELINA — A Mendon man faces multiple criminal charges stemming from a slew of break-ins in Mercer County.
In a news release, Mercer County Sheriff Jeff Grey said investigators will be filing numerous charges against Douglas N. Fonner, 27, of 5922 Tama Road, Mendon, who is currently being held in the Mercer County Detention Center on charges of contempt of court for violating a condition of bond in a previous breaking and entering case.

ST. MARYS — A familiar face will be helping oversee a million dollar project in the city of St. Marys.
During Monday night’s meeting, St. Marys City Councilors approved the first reading of an emergency resolution creating the temporary position of resident project representative for the southwest pump state project. The position, with a salary of $25 per hour, will be filled by Stan Davis.
ST. MARYS — Local board members participated in an annual districtwide tour Monday morning.
Members of the St. Marys Board of Education, Lisa Tobin, Aaron Braun, Ralph Wiley, Brian Little and Ronda Shelby, walked through the new high school-middle school complex, Dennings Vocational Building, St. Marys Primary School and St. Marys Intermediate School, as part of an annual board trip to see what their administration is requesting — which was submitted in December.

CELINA — Deputies in Mercer County are investigating the county's first fatality of 2012.
In a news release, Mercer County Sheriff Jeff Grey said his office is investigating a single-vehicle, fatal crash that occurred on Mercer-Darke County Line Road, just west of Cochran Road. At approximately 5:14 a.m. Monday, the Darke County Sheriff’s Office notified Mercer County Central Dispatch of a motor vehicle crash on the Mercer-Darke County Line Road. After Darke County deputies arrived, it was determined the crash occurred in Mercer County.
Jan. 23: The St. Marys City Board of Education will hold a work session to tour the facilities today. The meeting will begin at the District Service Center, 1445 Celina Road at 7:30 a.m. The board will take action on revisions to the recently adopted 2012-13 school calendar before the beginning the tour.
There will be a Zumba class and a yoga class at 6:45 p.m. and 7:45 p.m. respectively today at Woodland Rollerdome in St. Marys.
The St. Marys City Council is scheduled to meet at 7 p.m. today.
