Trio To Head To State Band

ST. MARYS — Three St. Marys locals will be heading to Columbus later this month to participate in the state’s fair band.

Current St. Marys Memorial High School seniors, Troy Newlove and Drew Poppe, will join alumnus Tanner Zizelman to participate in the 2011 All-Ohio State Fair Band during the Ohio State Fair in Columbus.

“We go down the 23rd,” Newlove said. “Then we have four days of nonstop practice before the fair starts. We have performances all throughout the fair.”

Group To Give Back

ST. MARYS — A group of residents with community service on their minds will be handing out putters and scorecards for the next eight weeks as part of a service project.

Clients of Anthony Wayne Services’ Day-Hab Services will be volunteering at the miniature golf course at K.C. Geiger Park from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Wednesday through August starting next week. The facility, located at 1621 Celina Road, St. Marys, also will donate its proceeds to various local nonprofit groups.

Minster OKs Bid For Resurfacing Project

MINSTER — On Tuesday, Minster Village Councilors awarded a contract for the upcoming street resurfacing project to Wagner Paving.

“Wagner’s has done a number of jobs for us in town,” Village Administrator Don Harrod said. “They do good work for us, so we have no problem recommending them.”

The engineer’s estimate for the project was $195,552, and the councilors appropriated $125,000 for the project at the beginning of this year.

Library Hosts Mexican Cooking Program

ST. MARYS — Local teens learned a few recipes they could cook for themselves as part of a activity that corresponds with a summer reading program at the library.

On Tuesday, local teens made salsa, guacamole and cheese — and black beans, if they wanted to add them — quesadillas as part of “Mexican cooking — Make it Yourself” activity at the St. Marys Community Public Library.

Park Preps For Busy Season

ST. MARYS — Sunny skies and calm waters brought a slew of boaters and campers to Grand Lake St. Marys State Park for the holiday weekend.

“It was a good weekend,” Park Manager Brian Miller told The Evening Leader. “The campground was at 90 percent occupancy, which is the best we’ve seen since Memorial Day weekend. Boat traffic was well above what it was — we had people tubing, skiing and people using boaters’ beaches for swimming. There also was a lot of fishing, having picnics and people enjoying the area.”

Celina Man Faces Charges In Attack

CELINA — A Celina man faces criminal charges for allegedly knocking a man off his bicycle Sunday morning.

The Celina Police Department responded to a report of an assault at 12:17 a.m. Sunday at 306 S. Brandon Ave. Officers found the alleged victim, Justin P. Nisewarner, 29, suffering from multiple injuries to his head and face.

July 5: FJ Stallo Memorial Library in Minster will hold stories in the park at 10 a.m. today.

New Bremen Public Library will host a craft day at 1 p.m., 1:30 p.m. and 2 p.m. today. Sign ups are required and all ages are welcome.

The Minster Village Council is scheduled to meet at 6:30 p.m. today. Moulton Township Trustees will meet at 8 p.m. today for the regular monthly meeting.

July 7: New Bremen Public Library will host Suitcase Stories at 10:30 a.m. today.

Celina Man Dies In Motorcycle Crash

CELINA — A Celina man died Sunday night after he crashed his motorcycle.

In a news release, Mercer County Sheriff Jeff Grey said his office is investigating the county's first traffic fatality of 2011. Dispatchers received a call of a possible motorcycle crash at 11:56 p.m. Sunday. The caller advised dispatchers they heard a motorcycle go past their house, then heard tires squealing and a crash.
