Lock One Set for Christmas Program

NEW BREMEN — Performers from around the area are inviting residents to come see their show on Sunday as a way to get into the holiday spirit.

Lock One Community Arts is performing “Christmas in the Village” on Sunday at the James F. Dicke Auditorium at New Bremen High School.

“Performances are at 2 p.m. and at 7 p.m. Sunday,” said Christy Shell with Lock One Community Arts. “Tickets are available at the door, and you can also get them at True Value Hardware.”

Snow Means Shoveling

ST. MARYS — With the region receiving its first snow of the season earlier this week, school officials are reminding residents to keep their sidewalks clear for local children.

“I see the kids when I’m going into work,” he said. “A lot of the kids will be walking or riding their bikes to school — it’s dangerous for them to do that if the sidewalk isn’t clear,” St. Marys Superintendent Jerry Skiver said.

He noted that unclear sidewalks can cause the students to walk in the street.

New Shop Opens Downtown

ST. MARYS — An apparel store opened its doors in downtown St. Marys Friday morning to area residents, offering a variety of school and custom, embroidered apparel.

Victory Apparel, located at 124 W. Spring St., St. Marys, offers a slew of local school apparel, including St. Marys, New Bremen, New Knoxville, Minster, Wapakoneta and Spencerville, in addition to a variety of Ohio State University apparel. Business Manager Sheila Goins said the owners of the local shop decided to expand into St. Marys to fill a need.

Officials Urge Caution

ST. MARYS — In the wake of this week’s snow storm, local officials are urging motorists to keep informed as winter draws closer.

“It’s really important to listen to weather forecasts this time of year,” Auglaize County EMA Director Troy Anderson said. “We try to put up notices early on our Facebook page early enough to catch them. We also don’t want people to think that if we put up a notice and we don’t get it that we are crying wolf.”

New Bremen Lights Tree

NEW BREMEN — An area village held its annual holiday kick off ceremony Thursday evening, officially turning on its holiday lights.

The New Bremen-New Knoxville Rotary’s Christmas Tree Lighting was Thursday in Lock One Park, and it included hot chocolate, cookies and a visit from Santa.

Otterbein Visitor Notes Available Benefits For Vets

ST. MARYS — A representative of the Veterans Service Commission spoke to area veterans about benefits they can obtain through the Department of Veterans Affairs Wednesday afternoon at Otterbein Senior Lifestyle Choices.

Auglaize County Veterans Service Commission Investigator/Veterans Services Officer Lynne Skaggs explained to attendees some of the requirements to obtain pensions, health care benefits, transportation, compensation and financial assistance through the VA.

Wild Wednesday

ST. MARYS — Local students had a hands-on look at science as part of a group's annual visit to their school.

Students at St. Marys Primary School received a visit from COSI on Wheels on Wednesday, where they learned about wildlife.

"We talked about habitats — there are four different ones you have in Ohio," COSI Outreach Educator Jordan Rader said. "We also talked about wildlife biologists and the different things they do."

Wine Trial Set

ST. MARYS — A St. Marys optometrist is scheduled to stand trial again in February on a different set of alleged sex crimes.

Douglas J. Wine, 52, 227 Candlewood Place, is scheduled to stand trial on two counts each of rape, first-degree felonies, gross sexual imposition, third-degree felonies, and sexual battery, third-degree felonies, starting Feb. 6 in Auglaize County Common Pleas Court. According to online court documents, seven days have been set aside for the trial.

Semi, Sedan Crash Sends 1 to Hospital With Injuries

NEW BREMEN — Troopers with the Wapakoneta Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol responded to a crash at the intersection of State Route 66 and State Route 219, with one person being injured on Thursday.

Troopers were dispatched to the intersection at 6:17 a.m., and they are investigating the two-vehicle injury crash involving a commercial vehicle and a passenger vehicle.
