ST. MARYS — Local high school students entered this school year with a new policy change that allows them to use their cell phones during the school day.
St. Marys Memorial High School students are allowed to keep their cell phones on during the day — during certain times of the day — which was a change in the school’s previous policy on cell phones and other wireless communication devices.
WAPAKONETA — A CSX railroad engineer was killed this morning in an accident on the CSX railroad tracks near Taylor Road close to the Auglaize-Shelby County border just off of County Road 25A.
Investigators at the scene were still evaluating evidence as of press time this morning, but he said it appears the engineer of the train was pinned between the engine and a railroad car during a switching operation.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.

MINSTER — On Tuesday, Minster Village Councilors agreed to craft an ordinance for a four-way stop at the intersection of Garfield and Third streets.
Minster Village Administrator Don Harrod said during a recent traffic survey, 342 cars passed through the intersection in a four-hour period on a Thursday morning.
“So there’s a lot of traffic down through there,” Harrod said.
CELINA — A local university is working with area companies in hopes to provide well-educated employees to fill existing voids in the local job market.
Wright State University Lake Campus now offers a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, with a focus on manufacturing. S. Narayanan, dean of the College of Engineering and Computer Science at the main campus, wanted to start the program in Celina and chose Ruby Mawasha to serve as the director of the new program at the Lake Campus.

CELINA — For the second time in three days a traffic stop has led to the seizure of a significant amount of heroin.
On Sunday, Celina Police Officer Brian Taylor recognized Zachery Frazier as the subject drove north on Main Street. The officer was aware that Frazier was under suspension from the state of Ohio. He confirmed this information through a computer check and stopped the vehicle at a residence in the 100 block of East Wayne Street at 2:33 p.m. Sunday
CELINA — An area official updated members of a local lake organization on a project that is scheduled to start this fall.
Mercer County Economic Development Director Jared Ebbing addressed members of the Lake Improvement Association during their monthly meeting Saturday morning.
He noted the Prairie Creek treatment train would be a system to return the “ecological balance” to that section of Grand Lake St. Marys.
ST. MARYS — A group of Auglaize County athletes recently celebrated their achievements from when they competed in a statewide competition earlier this season.
Auglaize County Special Olympics athletes were recognized by their peers for the achievements they netted during the 42nd annual Special Olympics Ohio State Summer Games held in Columbus in late June during a recent banquet in St. Marys.
“We took approximately 52 athletes this year,” Special Olympics Chair Dave Axe said.

ST. MARYS — A university and local school band are teaming up to provide a performance at the school’s first official home football game for the 2011 season.
The Pride of Dayton, the University of Dayton’s marching band, will be coming to St. Marys Sept. 9 to perform when St. Marys takes on Elida at Skip Baughman Stadium. This is the first time UD’s band has performed with the St. Marys All Brass Band, SMABB Director Dane Newlove said.
ST. MARYS — A local author and columnist recently released the second volume in his five-part series collection.
The Evening Leader Columnist John Andreoni released volume two of his series “Going Wild With Forda Birds.” The series encompasses a collection of Andreoni’s outdoor columns, which he started writing more than 40 years ago. Each column included in the collection is preceded by Andreoni’s present thoughts on the issue addressed.
MINSTER — A project along the Miami and Erie Canal should help improve the waterway for years to come.
Auglaize County Design Engineer Matt Quinter noted construction crews are approximately 70 percent done with phase one of a two-phased ditch petition project along the Miami and Erie Canal in Minster. The project will improve the waterway from First Street to Ohio 119 through the village.
