ST. MARYS — In a contested race that consisted of seven candidates, only a handful of candidates came out winning the two available spots during Tuesday's election for a local board of education.
ST. MARYS — For the first time in more than a decade, the city of St. Marys has a new mayor.
Republican Patrick McGowan defeated four-term mayor Democrat incumbent Greg Freewalt and nonpartisan candidate Pam Hobler in a tightly contested race. McGowan, a current councilor-at-large, defeated Freewalt by a margin of 1,197 votes (46.81 percent) to 1,136 votes (44.43 percent) in unofficial results. Hobler finished with 224 votes (8.76 percent).
NEW BREMEN — An annual shopping event returns this weekend and promises fun for all shoppers
German Family Christmas makes its return to the Golden Triangle on Friday as local merchants will offer specials to local shoppers. The event, sponsored by the Southwestern Auglaize County Chamber of Commerce, serves as the unofficial kick off to the holiday shopping season.
NEW BREMEN — In an effort to keep the community involved and informed of its decisions regarding the new elementary building project, a local board of education will again hold a community meeting.
The New Bremen Board of Education will host its second community meeting at 7 p.m. Dec. 14 in the old gym. The meeting, President Keith Bornhorst said, will update area residents on the progress of the project, including a preliminary building design.
November 7th
ST. MARYS — Two St. Marys men have been flown to a Dayton area hospital after a crash early this morning on Glynwood Road at Ohio 116.
Garet Schmehl, 20, 17906 Ohio 66, St. Marys, who was driving, and a passenger, Jeremy Robinson, 20, of 821 Motz St., St. Marys, were both transported from the site of the crash by St. Marys EMS to Joint Township District Memorial Hospital, in St. Marys.
CELINA — A local lake official says progress is being made that could result in a facility being built to help in the battle to heal Grand Lake St. Marys.
ST. MARYS — The newest addition to the city of St. Marys’ business portfolio recently opened its doors to area shoppers.
A steady stream of shoppers filled the parking lot in front of Tractor Supply Company on Friday and Saturday. The store, located in the former Chief’s building in St. Marys Square, boasts a wide selection of agricultural, outdoors and livestock supplies.
November 5th
Nov. 5: Grand Lake Health System will host a health fair from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. today at the YMCA in New Bremen.
The Lake Improvement Association is scheduled to meet at 10 a.m. today at the Celina Moose Lodge.
The fourth annual Tastefully Simple Open House and Raffle will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. today at 427 W. South St., St. Marys. The event will benefit the Auglaize County Dog Warden and Dog House.
The Glitter-n-Gold Fall Festival will run from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. today at Memorial High School.
November 4th
ST. MARYS — An Army soldier visited a local physical education class to give the students a taste of what it takes to be a soldier.
Staff Sergeant Brent Burnfield visited Monica VanderHorst’s advanced physical education classes Friday. Burnfield had the students rotate through approximately 10 stations, ranging from push-ups to lunges to bear crawls down the hallway.
“Sometimes we do circuit training,” Burnfield said. “We do all different exercises to help out with our physical fitness tests and physical exercises.”
ST. MARYS — A local school district went into cautionary mode after being informed of a “potentially dangerous” situation by the Auglaize County Sheriff’s Office Friday morning.
Superintendent Jerry Skiver noted the district received a phone call informing it of the situation.
“We had information of an issue off campus that could potentially be dangerous to the kids at school,” he said. “We went into controlled access.”
Controlled access, he noted, involves extensive monitoring of visitors.
