NK BOE Talks Finances

NEW KNOXVILLE — New Knoxville Board of Education members look forward to a presentation from Superintendent Kim Waterman and Treasurer Cathy Doseck in a future meeting to get a better idea of the district’s fiscal situation and when bonds will expire as they look at where the school will spend in the future.

“Medical insurance is just astronomical,” board member Steve Frankenberg said as he looked over the school’s bills.

Drugs, Gun Seized During Stop

WAPAKONETA — Troopers in Wapakoneta seized almost 100 ecstasy pills and a loaded handgun following a traffic stop Saturday morning.

Louis A. Williams, 33, of Birmingham, Ala., was incarcerated in the Auglaize County Jail and charged with possession of drugs, a first-degree felony and for carrying a concealed weapon, a third-degree felony, following a traffic stop at 7:05 a.m. Saturday. Troopers stopped a 2003 Chevy Impala, with Alabama registration, for an alleged speed violation on Interstate 75, near milepost 117.

Siblings Show Off Works

ST. MARYS — The Arts Place Collective Center, 142 East Spring St, St. Marys, held an opening reception for its newest exhibit, “Different Visions,” featuring artists and siblings Kay and Val Sluterbeck. The Van Wert residents share a house, and a studio, but have very different artistic styles.

Val Sluterbeck, who has been painting and drawing for about five years, likes to create works based off of things he sees in everyday life.

Speakers Tout Global Economy During Lake Campus Summit

CELINA — Business people, university faculty and community leaders gathered for Wright State University Lake Campus’ third annual Regional Summit  Friday morning to discuss the move to a global economy.

Special speakers Director of Sales Pat Carus, from Emerson Climate Technology, Sharyl Garner, Chief Administrative Officer of Midmark Corp., and David Cahill, Managing Partner at Avanulo, shared their strategies for competing in a global market.

New Treasurer Takes Post

NEW KNOXVILLE — A new face has taken over the treasurer’s seat at New Knoxville.

Cathy Doseck replaced longtime treasurer Marcia Wierwille this year, after serving as treasurer for the ESC in Shelby County. Doseck said she took the job because she was ready to be part of the day-to-day life of a school again.

“At the ESC I was in an office, and I didn’t see students or teachers,” she said. “I wanted to be part of the excitement students have for learning and they have for teaching.”

Cards Show Off Inventions

NEW BREMEN — New Bremen Middle School students showcased their innovation Thursday at the Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fair revealing not just their ability to invent, but also the nature of the problems they encounter in their everyday lives.

Teacher Tracy Steinke said that the fair started in 2010 as a requirement of the STEM grant the school received.

“We’re trying to get them more engineering focused, looking at problem solving,” she said.
