Rocket Club Set For Launch

MINSTER — After a canceled test launch and two rescheduled launches, the Minster Rocket Club has passed every requirement and qualified to present its rocket to NASA engineers in Huntsville, Ala., on Saturday.

The club left Wednesday for a four to five day intensive session with engineers, culminating in a Saturday or Sunday launch, weather permitting.

Suspect Makes Initial Appearance

CELINA —  The alleged gunman in the Grube double homicide made his initial appearance in a Mercer County courtroom Wednesday.

Flanked by his attorney Donna Post, Trevin M. Sanders, 19, looked down at the defense table for much of the approximately hourlong hearing in Mercer County Juvenile Court as Judge Mary Pat Zitter read the complaint against him. Sanders is accused of shooting and killing Robert Grube, 70, and daughter his Colleen Grube, 47, in November 2011.

Officer Cleared

ST. MARYS —  A St. Marys police officer who was involved in a shooting on Derrick Street in March has been cleared of any wrongdoing.

St. Marys Interim Police Chief Tim Eberle told The Evening Leader he received word that Patrolman Luke Turpin was cleared of any wrongdoing associated with the shooting. Brad Lee Scheer, 62, 601 Derrick St., was shot by officers who responded to Scheer's residence following a 911 call on March 13. Scheer made a 911 call and threatened to shoot any officers who responded to his home.

Local Store Going Strong

MINSTER — Stanley Kuenning, founder and previous owner of Western Ohio True Value Hardware in Minster, turned 85 this year and is still going strong at the hardware store.

Kuenning and his wife, Dona Mae, both originally from New Bremen, opened the store in 1953, when it was originally named Western Ohio Hardware.

Kuenning got his start in the hardware business in 1939. He was 11 when he asked his mother for a pair of long, black pants, to replace the “knickers” boys had been wearing since the 1920s.

NEW BREMEN — He can be called flat, but his adventures are anything but one-dimensional.

Third-graders at New Bremen Elementary are receiving letters from around the world from their globe-trotting friend Flat Stanley, part of a project teacher Jenny Perryman said teaches letter writing, map skills and cultural understanding.

Local Recounts Boston Marathon Bombing

BOSTON — A local runner who took part in the Boston Marathon on Monday missed the bombing by 15 minutes.

Celina resident Bill Roy took to the streets of Boston to compete in the marathon — a major goal for those who run marathons. Roy crossed the finish line, found his family, went through the post race photo shoot and was retrieving his personal items when a few minutes later he heard a sound that shook the nation.

Boston Marathon Explosion

BOSTON (AP) — Two bombs exploded near the finish of the Boston Marathon on Monday, killing two people, injuring 23 others and sending authorities rushing to aid wounded spectators, race organizers and police said.

One runner, a Rhode Island state trooper, said he saw at least two dozen people with very serious injuries, including missing limbs.

About two hours after the winners crossed the line, there was a loud explosion on the north side of Boylston Street, just before the photo bridge that marks the finish line. Another explosion could be heard a few seconds later.

Hatchery Gives Fish Lessons

ST. MARYS — When people pay for fishing and hunting licenses, they may wonder where that money goes. Part of it ends up at the St. Marys Fish Hatchery on Ohio 364 raising fish straight from the eggs to stock fish for Grand Lake St. Marys, but also to populate lakes all over the state, from Mosquito Lake to the east, Clendening Lake to the south and as far north as Olander Lake.

The hatchery welcomed visitors Saturday, inviting them to learn how the fish are raised, try out archery, have food and to let children catch a few fish.

Local Students Attend Make Believe Hospital

ST. MARYS — Children from around the area arrived at Joint Township District Memorial Hospital Thursday and Friday to take part in Make Believe Hospital, an initiative designed to acquaint them with the different departments, equipments, uniforms and procedures they might encounter if they ever need to be in the hospital.

Children were instructed about healthy eating and exercise, given the opportunity to listen to their hearts with a stethoscope, see an IV, try on a cast, see real X-rays of broken bones, and learn about the entire hospital processes.
