WAYNESFIELD — A former Waynesfield resident has been killed in action while serving in Afghanistan.
Staff Sergeant Sonny Zimmerman, 25, died Monday, according to sources close to his family.
A series of posts on Zimmerman’s death began appearing on Facebook on Tuesday. Zimmerman’s grandmother, Loretta Zimmerman, confirmed that her grandson had died in action on Monday.
ST. MARYS — City officials unveiled the preliminary 2014 budget during Monday night’s St. Marys Finance Committee meeting.
The proposed budget, which will not be finalized until later this year, came in at $47.55 million — up slightly from the $45.70 million that was appropriated for 2013. To date, the city has incurred expenses of $20.6 million. The expenses were $40.24 million in 2010, $40.78 million in 2011 and $41.43 million in 2012.
CELINA — For the third time in four years, the Governor's Cup Regatta has been canceled.
Citing a lack of financial support from sponsors, organizers of the boat race on Grand Lake St. Marys pulled the plug on this year's event. The event was canceled in 2010 because of algae issues on the lake and in 2012 because of water depth concerns.
Despite the series of recent cancellations, organizers have said they hope the regatta will be brought back in the future.
WAPAKONETA — A 17-year-old Wapakoneta girl was killed in a crash Thursday afternoon along Ohio 501.
According to a report from the Wapakoneta Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol, at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Emily Ann Saam, 17, was driving a 2000 Dodge Durango south on Ohio 501, just north of Linzee Road. Saam's vehicle drifted off the eastside of the road and struck a tree. The impact with the tree caused severe damage to the Durango and sparked a small fire.
ST. MARYS — Fallen trees and limbs have forced the closure of two local dog parks until further notice.
Grand Lake St. Marys State Park Manager Brian Miller said Wednesday's storm caused trees throughout Grand Lake St. Marys State Park to fall. The debris forced the closure of East Bank Road as well as the dog parks at the East and West banks.
"We are unsure of how soon we can open them," Miller said. "Our goal is to have both parks opened by the weekend."
ST. MARYS — A severe storm that downed trees, limbs and power poles left the city of St. Marys in the dark for several hours on Wednesday.
A system that blew through the region early Wednesday afternoon caused a massive power outage in the city. Crews worked for several hours to re-energize the lines, but as those lines came back on, there were reports of a transformer failure.

ST. MARYS — Crews were on the scene of a car fire shortly before noon Tuesday along westbound U.S. 33, near Kroger. A report from the Wapakoneta Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol is incomplete at this time. The St. Marys Fire Department responded the scene.
